Ok,this is typical of how my week has been going. I will post about that later. Need to make supper. Got my new waterpump and belt and tensioner today....finally. Installed it. Started car, ran as usual. Watched it for 10 minutes or so, no leakes. Topped off radiator. Got in car, while running, turned heat on high, blowing cold air about 30 seconds. gave it a little gas, and then the car dies. Won't start, not even an almost, even with starting fluid. Turns over just fine, gas tank full. I'm tired, back hurts, and cold. Didn't check anything yet. Any ideas where to start? |

I would start with the timing belt. Possibly jumped? Not tensioned properly? |

tension good and still on marks. Checked that. When it died, it just died, didn;t take it's time about it. All connections appear to be good also. |

Well that's odd. I would see if you have spark and fuel. |

I'm guessing that you didn't properly install the tensioner to the little metal part that goes on the back of it, and has a spring connecting it to the screw on the oil pump. The little metal part has a piece that is 90 degrees to the rest of it, that little bent part MUST go into the small round hole on the back of the tensioner. If you do not seat that properly and you torque down the timing belt, the belt will never get enough tension on it to do more than just idle. When you try to rev it, that loose belt will jump teeth and die, just like what you described. |

I just went out and was going to check spark, but said what the heck and tried to start it. Started up, but very rough idle. let it idle about a minute, then manually revved it a few times. Not much, just little gooses. idled up just fine. Got in it and turned the fan on. 2 minutes later it died again, as soon as I started to give it gas. cranked the engine, nothing. Cranked it with peddle to floor, little chugs. Is it running way to rich? will go out in an hour and try it again. I did install the tensioner correctly. Glad I had the manual, with pics, cause the last owner actually had it on weird. It worked, but weird. It is correct now, and tension on the belt. Turned it over by hand after the first time it died, and marks were still correct. Edited by mark alan, Jan 20 2010, 08:27 PM.

Did you unhook any wires while you were working on the car? |

O2 sensor wire in particular. See if there are codes in it using the check engine light guide. |

waited 36 minutes and tried again. would not start. Took off air cleaner and the attached hoses, plugs. Started up with peddle all the way to floor. Took a bit of cranking. ran for 11 minutes. Every so often it would start to lower down the idle, and i would rev it back up. Sounds like a big miss when it does that till the revs climb then smoothes out. Everything is dry, and plugged in. No spark leaking in the dark, and had spark after died. No smell of gas at the TB after cranking with peddle down. Appreciate all the help guys. I think I'm done for the night on it, but will start in tomorrow on any of your suggestions. Gonna go and get a new distrib cap and rotor for sure.

recheck your timing marks for the timing belt. is the ign timing way off after the timing belt change? I've seen cars when off a tooth start and run cold. but as soon as they get warm die and not restart. |

hi mark, curious problem. other than the fact that you'd just changed the timing belt, i'd begin to suspect fuel supply since you say you do have spark. sorry to just add one more variable. |
