1999 Geo Metro Timing problem; Timing Problem

Hi,
We got this 1999 Geo Metro at Hyde Auto Service two days ago because it wouldn't start. We got it to start but it was somehow sucking from the exhaust and exhausting through the intake. So we took the timing cover out. The belt was loose, and saw that there are two timing marks on the camshaft sprocket, which I believe they are called the reference marks, and one dot right under one of them. They are in the exact apposed direction of one another. I looked at mitchell and the camshaft sprocket that they have is different from what I see in the car. It looks like the camshaft sprocket from the 93-95 model, the only difference is that the 93-95 model sprocket has the reference marks about 135 degrees from each other, as opposed to this one that has the timing marks 180 from each other. Can someone tell me which one I am supposed to use, since I don't know if this engine is one of those that the piston can hit the valves(forgot what they are called)?
Would like to have a picture, but I'm off work and not going to be back there until monday.
Can someone please help me?

I wish I could help you out more than this, but all of the helpfull advice I have is that the motor is NOT an interfeance engine.

This might help a little bit. Pictures courtesy of Hacksaw. 80C is the stock setting. If you take the cam gear off, rotate it so the cam down is in the slot opposite of the 60A mark, then the 60A mark will be at the top and you'll have to move the camshaft back just a tiny bit to get it lined up with the timing marks again, then you'll be +2 degrees advanced camshaft timing.

that's my problem. It looks almost like this one, but it doesn't have the numbers and letters. and the marks are exactly in the opposite direction.

I would think that if they are 180 deg. opposite then it would not matter. The person I know of that sees a lot of these is Mike (aka suprf1y) at 3 Tech who modifies them. You might want to send him a PM.

bad bent, I will send him a PM. I can't see how that wouldn't make a diference.

johnny, it has a "pin", not a drilled hole, just like the one in the picture above, which is right below one of the reference marks.

I have been trying to find any pictures like this camshaft sprocket, but I can't find any that looks the same. I wonder if this sprocket is from another car.

I'd like to see a pic, but you can probably use either setting satisfactorily.
As long as the cam dowel is on the bottom, and the alignment mark is 180 degrees away (on the top, aligning with the valve cover notch), you should be fine.

My '93 G10 cam sprocket looks like this one
in the Haynes Manual:

I belive we have the same gears I have no letters on my gear and 2 groves 180 degee's from each other there is also a Notch on one of the sprockets. Still trying to figure this one out.

set the crankshaft to 0 TDC or
remove #1 spark plug and look inside , turn the engine until #1 piston is at the top , the very tippy top .
mark the crankshaft pulley to indicate that is #1 0 TDC

remove distributor cap
turn cam until rotor points at #1 cylinder on the distributor cap , look on the cam wheel and line up the closest mark / notch to the notch on the valve cover

put on timing belt with both of the above marks aligned
reassemble
drive car to NY so i can make it right

Post #4 shows the proper orientation of the slots in the timing gear. Although the markings may be different I suspect if you installed your gear the same way it should be fine.
