smokes and fouls plugs after head job

I took a quick look through the responses, but I didn't see anyone mention the oil check valve located in the top of the block. When you pull the head on this puppy there is a small pencil-eraser-sized oil check valve that can fall out, come out with the gasket, whatever. It doesn't screw in, just sits in the top of the block.

When I did the head job on my '98 I noticed in the Haynes manual :news (believe it or not) that you should make sure the check valve was properly installed before reinstalling the head. I couldn't find mine in the block or head. After taking the head back to the machine shop, looking up some tech bulletins there, searching the parts washer - we didn't find it. The tech bulletins and the guys at the shop said it would smoke like it was on fire without this. On the way home I racked my brain to think of where mine might be? After a very careful search of the contents of my shop vac, yup! there it was :smackface

I came really close to putting the whole mess back together without it.

If you don't remember this check valve, chances are it's missing. Could be another journey to the center of the motor :banghead

Hope that's not the case...

Got 70 MPG?

I'm beginning to think that it must be the head job then. Almost everything seems to be ruled out now...
