Given the fact that the engine oil is changed regularly (every 3k miles?), and that your driving habits are good, is it possible to go 100k, 200k or even 300k miles on a 3 cyl. 1.0 liter and still claim it uses/burns/leaks NO oil? I know the seals have to give up at some point, as well as other moving parts in the engine (piston rings/bearings, etc.), but isn't 200k miles enough to wear some of these parts out, leading to oil loss, no matter how well you take care of the engine? |

i dont know why milage if car is treated right would cause oil loss |

I just saw a running metro on craigslist with 218k on the original engine and trans for $750. Anything is possible. |

Valve stem seals will wear out regardless of how it's treated. Piston rings also can't last forever. I'd be surprised to see zero oil usage at 200k. |

using the correct oil NOT the current crop of SAE oils such as LSAC GF4 and API SM it is not uncommon to have european VW Audi BMW Mercedes cars go 5k miles with out loosing more than 1 quart at 200k miles many of them do not do any better than that at 10k miles .................................. you should look up the current spec for max oil consumption in current production cars you will be amazed i would be amazed if they can really achieve it. |

I agree. If you keep up with the maintenance, such as replacing worn seals (outside and inside the motor), use high quality oil filters, synthetic oil (0W30 preferable), change the oil no later than 8000 miles (filter every 4000), and be easy on the motor for the most part, then there should be no problems with getting over 300K miles on the motor with minimal oil usage. After this point though, you may want to begin planing on replacing the rings. |

other than to say the engine will last as long as it can with ACEA A3,B3-B4 5w,30 synthetic oil and 5k interval oil change s other than to say it will be high , i would not attempt to put a value on the mileage at the time of eventual failure. i would not recommend 0w 30 oil because the engineers that designed the engine recommended 5w30 i would recommend 5w30 or 0w40 only synthetic oil with ACEA A3,B3-B4 specification , navigate to bobistheoilguy and study to arrive at your own decision |

There's no problem using 0w30. They probably didn't recommend it because it wasn't available at the time they designed the engine. Both are 30 weight at operating temp. The 0w30 is just better in very cold temps. |

I can only speak for my car 93 geo vert. I had almost 200,000 when I rebuilt. At the time of the rebuild I was not using any significant amount of oil. This was for a Geo that did not get any special type of maintenance. My 24 year oil son drove the car for almost 2 years and his driving style and maintenance left much to be desired. I used mostly Havoline oil, what ever weight I happen to have on hand at the time. I was using maybe at the most 1 quart ever 12 to 1500 miles. I really dont remember because oil consumption was not a issue with the car. When someone states their car burns NO oil they may really mean it uses no significant amount of oil.

It depends a lot on driving conditions .maintenance, how you drive, where you drive ,weather, and how many years it took you to get that many miles, they say highway driving causes very little wear on a motor. On youtube they show a man with a SAAB that has 1,000,000 miles on the motor.so to answer your question,i would say YES,anything is possible.----THAT'S MY OPINION AND I'M STICKING TO IT.--

Not NO oil, but a small amount is quite reasonable. I find that they use half a quart between 5,000 mile oil changes from day one, but my 98 is at 148K and still uses the exact same half quart. |

hi m50, i had 320k on my 91 and it used less than a quart between changes. i followed a 3000 mi, oil and filter schedule though didn't always get to it on time. compression had dropped somewhat over that time but the mileage was still in low to mid 40s. i did switch to 10-40 or 20-50 for the last 40k if i remember correctly. head gasket finally leaked ...i'm guessing it gave up due to some heating changes .... and i rebuilt. |

I'm over 200K miles right now and use about 1 quart every 3000 miles (distributor oring leak). |

even a brand new motor uses a little bit of oil, but as for saying whether or not it uses much oil (more than a quart per change) really does depend on the condition of the motor (ie, regular maintenance). I'm sure if I wanted to, I could take two brand new side by side and make one of them burn oil significantly faster than the other |

You can get a new O-ring for about $1 at the local Ace or hardware store. Cheaper than oil and keeps the driveway/garage clean. I replaced 2 o rings on my old metros with no leaks. There's a thread regarding O rings showing exact dimensions some where. Or just take your old one in for comparison. |
