Is there an oil sending unit on the 92 geo?
Yep, it's down near the oil filter.

No it was driving fine. I drove it one day and then I tried to start it the following night and it wouldn't start. There was no shaking or sputtering at all the last time it worked.
... And this was exactly what happened to Unicron7's car as well prior to me pulling the motor and discovering the burnt valves.

That sounds expensive. Tell me it isn't.

I have a 94 that was doing that sometimes and I would spray some propane in the throttle body and it would start right up. Turned out to be low pressure from the fuel pump

The fuel pump cost $240 and I installed it myself

Well... I've told you to do a compression test... Only one way to know for sure. :deal

i agree you need a compression test . one more thing for a quick check on your timing is to rotate the crank tdc mark to the timing cover pointer and then remove the distributor cap and see if the rotor is pointing at # one or 180 out either is okay. you could have jumped a tooth to me it doesn't sound like a lot of compression there

It would most likely be trying to fire and popping with just one tooth jumped.

We checked the spark plugs. They looked fine and were getting spark.

We checked the distributor. No corrosion or anything horrible going on there.

We checked the fuel pump. It was pumping.

We checked the timing belt. It was on and in good shape. "...

====================

test do not guess -

based on your statements above

go and buy a can of starter fluid , with upper air cleaner cover and airfilter removed spray some in the throttle body
does the engine start and stall in a few seconds ?

yes
or
no

if yes , the injector is not working
if no
you WILL NEED TO TEST COMPRESSION
and
you will NEED to verify that the timing belt is on correctly .
"looks Ok" and "It was on and in good shape" does not work

get your hands on a DVOM and a vacuum gauge and a timing light
post test results

Ok can somebody tell me what I need and what I need to do for a compression test? Or just point me to a thread that already has this information.

All things considering. I would suggest you find a mechanic to diagnose the problem. If after he tells you what is the problem and he wants to charge you too much to fix it, then post here for sure what he says the problem is and then we can help you fix the problem. You are running in several directions and thats not a good thing. You need someone who knows what they are doing to get to the bottom of the problem. That is my suggestion. Diagnosing a cars ill is almost as bad as a doctor diagnosing someones health problems. Sometimes it is tricky. If you are not mechanically inclined sometimes it is just best to bite the bullet and let a professional enginedoctor look at it. LOL

:hmm This may or may not be your problem ,but I had the same thing happen to me a year ago .I worked on the car almost all day trying to get it started.Switched parts out from two other junk Geos trying to find the problem. After about 4 hours and at the end of my rope, :spaz I got tired getting in and out of the car to trying to start it .So I hook up a remote starter switch .Turned on the ing. switch hit the button and it started right up.Shut off the car ,tried again with the key switch and no start ,it would only start using the remote switch ,So I installed a push button switch and no more problems. :ermm: My sounds like it had a bad switch ^o) It may sound crazy but it'sworth a try.

if you have not tried the test with the starter fluid
you are getting ahead of yourself

if you don't understand
you must follow the guidance in the order suggested

you must start at the beginning and finish at the end
or you will be chasing your own tail

remain focused .
not attempting to insult you .
sorry , that's just the way it is
