I recently bought a 2000 Chevy Metro LSi. It has the 4 cylinder with auto trans and approximately 84k miles on it. The guy I bought it from told me that the oil pressure light was nothing to worry about because his mechanic said it was a faulty sensor. I don't believe in a faulty sensor right away so I hooked up a guage to it and here's what I found. At cold temperatures I have 50 psi of oil pressure. It's about normal to me because of how cold it gets now being winter and all the oil is probably really thick. No oil leaks that I can find. Spark plugs look normal and compression test was clear across all cylinders. At operating temperatures, the oil pressure goes to zero. I rev the engine a little and the oil pressure raises like it normally would. I pulled off the cap while the car was running and it was splashing oil all over the place like I normally see in all my other cars. I just recently changed the oil with pennzoil 5w-30 and a napa 1385 filter. The oil level is fine, it's in between the dots. There's no water in the oil either. I don't know why it's doing that, i'm really confused, and it's my only car so I could really use some help right now. |

do the lifters make a lot of tappety noises when the oil pressure is low and then get quiet when the pressure is in the "normal" range ? you may have a bad oil pump or the gasket between the pickup tube and block leaks and the pump is sucking air not oil or the pickup tube screen is partially clogged with gunk or the pressure relief valve is clogged with gunk or the engine has bad bearings and the play is so large that the oil just oozes out between the bearing surfaces as opposed to building up pressure when hot. or an unknown combination of the above scenarios , if you keep driving with low oil pressure you will damage the engine . the PO may have already done that , the last scenario will happen as a result of any one of the others |

They are in the rockers. They will fall out if you don't pay attention when pulling the head. Ask me how I know. |

fwiw, my motor would read near the 0 when it was warmed up, but didnt click or anything. it was the idle speed, at 800rpm it had virtually none, but 920-950 it read 10 |
