Metro longevity; How many miles on your Metro

I have a 1994 Geo Metro that I bought new for $8500. It's the only brand new car I've ever bought.
It now has 207000 miles on it. So far I have put on new fuel pump[$240], a pcv valve, three timing belts, an alternator[$130] and a set of brake pads on the front[the rear shoes are still original].
I have always used premium fuel and mobil one synthetic oil[15w50]. I change the filter at 5000 miles and the oil at 10000 miles. It uses a pint of oil every 5000 miles, just like when it was new.
How does this compare to your service in your Metro?

My only question is did your timing belts break? Why so many? I put a timming belt on at 170000 and then I only did it because I was not sure if it was a interferance engine or not. I am sure you have taken better care of yours than I did mine but all I have done is add oil when low and change it about once a year maybe. Only other thing needed to be done to the car is cv axle.

Two broke with about 40000 miles on them,iI don't know why. I just changed one as pm. I have read this is an interferance engine but it must not be. One belt broke going 70 and the other going 45 with no damage.BTW- how much was that cv and how did you know you needed it?

I believe both the 3 cylinder and 4 cylinder suzuki engines are NON interference.

Single overhead cams are but dual overhead cams are not. They are interferance.

When your cv axle is bad it will make a popping sound when you are turning or the rubber boot is cracked. The best place I have seen on cv axles is napa. Napa is usually high on most stuff but on axles they are about the cheapest where I live.

it is difficult to mount a serious debate against a successful long term test
such as your s

but

A; in your car
there is no valid reason to use premium fuel , if you switch to 87 octane top tier fuel your fuel economy will go up , first tank . see toptiergas.com to study and learn .

B; mobil 1 15w50 is INcorrect for your engine
imho you should switch to synthetic 5w30 with
European specification of ACEA A3,B3-B4 , mobil 1 5w30 does NOT meet that specification

mobil 1 15w50 is not even in the same ballpark and should NOT be used ?

see bobistheoilguy study and learn

Aren't the 3 cylinder and 4 cylinders engines in Metros single cam?

i tried regular fuel but noticed some valve pinging. Also premium fuel is more highly refined and should have less deposits in it to clog the injector. Mobil 15w50 has higher amounts of zinc and phosphorus in it than the recommended oil. That's good for those flat tappet lifters. Also the car hauls several hundred pounds of tools as I run a repair business out of it and have all it's life.My friends use to laugh at someone running a repair business out of a Metro but the laughing stopped when gas got to $3 a gallon and most of them were using ford vans that get about 12mpg and driving a hundred miles a day is common in the summertime repairing air conditioners like I and they do.
Anyway, the load this car hauls is another reason I use mobil15w50. If I didn't use mobil I'd use Rotella diesel truck oil like some big time drag racers do.

145,000 on my 95 3 cylinder 5 speed. Nothing major done to engine but uses a bit of oil and is probably ready for a rebuild.

It sounds like you need to back off your timing a bit to keep your gas at 87 octane.

Mine has over 200K now, still running strong!

242000.......... Rebuilt it around 210k I guess. I think I put 3 belts on in first 200k One broke, the other 2, I replaced before going a long trip. One clutch and cv joints nothing else major that I can think of. :banana :banana :banana Used Havoline 30 weight for most of its life. I use 10/30 right now.

the last time I tried regular gas it had the original belt on it so if the timing was off it came from the factory that way. I thought it might be a stopped up EGR valve as earlier I used some regular and it didn't ping but since it doesn't ping on premium I'll just use premium.
