Hey folks.... Yesterday I pulled the EGR valve back off. I took a plastic tie wrap (zip tie) and pushed up into the suction hole on the intake manifold. It went in about 6 inches or so before it stopped. I am guessing I hit a turn and couldn't negotiate around the curve. I then took my shop vac and put up to both holes on the intake manifold and let the vacuum run a few seconds to pull out any loose carbon/dust. I started the car and put my finger in fron of each hole (with the EGR valve off). I felt the suction on the hole nerest the firewall and felt the air blowing out the hole nearest the front bumper. So....I wonder if: 1. I was not sufficiently checking for suction 2. When I pushed the tie wrap in the hole I knocked the obstruction loose. So then I took some sea foam and carb/choke cleaner and again sprayed the heck out of the holes on the EGR valve. I also took some sea foam in put directly in the throttle body with the car running. I then cut the car off, poured some more in, and let it sit a few mins. Upon restart, some smoke did come out the tail pipe, but not tons. I also poured 1/2 can of sea foam directly in the gas tank. Finally, I reset the "check engine" light. So...if the check engine light comes back on, I am at a loss as to why, since I am feeling the suction on the suspect intake into the manifold. Hopothetically...if the light comes back on with the 51 code again, what might I start looking at this time as the culprit? Another question...with the Sea Foam, how much do you use in the throttle body? Do you pour it in with the engine running or with the car turned off? |

Just as a FYI here are two pics of the exhaust manifold. The first shows all three ports and on the left or #3 you can see the EGR porting and maybe a 1/8" layer of carbon build up; ![]() In this pic, looking from above, the yellow lines show the 90o turn the exhaust gases make from the exhaust flow. ![]() A pic of the hole through the block.Just another method... I have poured Seafoam through both the TB and brake booster vacuum hose, which cleans the hose BTW. Using a small funnel for either, I pour in 3-4 ounces while revving the engine and use the last 1-2 oz to flood the TB and the engine stalls. Stalling soaks the carbon (so I understand), wait 10-15 minutes, start it up and go for a drive, usually a 5 minute drive and it's not embarrassing. So if you repeat the Seafoam you would likely cover your bases. IMHO.Did the zip tie do the trick, hard to say... if you get a 51 code don't give up and post if it happens. |
