that was just silly -

you must live the mantra
Test Do NOT Guess .

now
look in the how to section and read about testing CKP CMP circuits

locate the wiring diagrams ( in the top headings of this forum ) for your system
print them
test power and ground to the ECM using the

T pin directions and voltage drop directions in the How to section

report your test results and

if you have questions AFTER you begin testing
post them - i will guide you , it is easy - my mom could do this with me guiding her .

but you need to do your part
ready begin

I'm a bit slow, where do I find these CMP and CKP sensors to even check the voltage??

On a 1993 model, the CMP is located in the distributor. I have a gut feeling that if you slap aa new or used distributor in that car, it will run!

Alrite, If the CPM is under the distributor cap and rotor, it had 1 red wire and one yellow wire, with the key on, I had 0.17 volts on both of them using the T-Pin Test.

now , with a T pin in each wire at the CMP
DVOM set on AC volts
DVOM scale on 2 to 4 volts max depending on the meter

attempt to start the engine
while cranking , what is voltage on the CMP

post test results

next , depending on these test results ...
we test the ignitor

I will try this when I have an extra person here. THe lowest setting on my DVOM for AC is 20V, is that going to be low enough??

Yes, 20 AC will work.

OK, at the CMP, with the Tpin test, on the yellow and red wire. With it turning over I have 0.24 Volts the whole time it's turning over. Same voltage on each wire.

I forgot to mention that the 0.24V reading was without the altenator in the car. I decided to take it out and have it tested, They put it in their test machine and it started throwing sparks and failed within 5 seconds of testing. So I guess the altenator is bad. LOL

alrite, I'm going to try and get a new altenator tonight and test it out again, the salvage yard says they will give me the altenator and distributor in exchange for what I paid for the computer I bought.

if those measurements were made with one test lead on battery negative
and the other on the CMP sensor
then the CMP sensor is bad

if not
you will need to retest , with one test lead on battery negative and the other on each pin in turn of the CMP

OR both test leads on the CMP
240mv is too low a value although i do not know the "good" value
i will check in my saved files to see if i captured that

at idle
should be about 2 volts measured -
cranking the starter at 1/2 idle speed i would expect around 1 volt.

assuming a fully charged battery and no voltage drops in the starter circuit

Yes, That was with the negative lead on the battery. But there wasn't an alternator in the car. I have an alternator in the car now and I'm getting the same reading.

based on your test results
the CMP is bad , a used distributor that has a good CMP will be the easiest fix .

now you know how to test the used CMP , you can connect it and spin it by hand , should cause spark
key on engine off , do not have a hand near the coil wire for that test ....
==========================
i will be off line for a few days
we have no electricity and the phone lines were removed by a falling tree , our entire development is dark and some roads are still not passable due to fallen trees

Ok, new alternator, new cap, new rotor, new CMP, new plug wires, tried another computer, and the coil has tested out ok?? I'm out of ideas

Forgot to mention, The CMP came as a package unit with the distributor, but I just changed the CMP
