That's the thingy with the fins on it I was wondering what the heck it was. Is there a way to test it?
And that looks nothing like the 3 wire jobby the parts store has that they call an "ignitor".

I found another one at the wrecking yard. Bought it just to test and compare, I took this silver box with fins into Schucks with me and they had NO CLUE what it was.

possibly an earlier version of the AC Delco Voltage Regulator?

Could be a voltage regulator, but the alternator should be internally regulated. I still have no idea what that silver finned thing is, but it still didnt' help. I'm at a loss of what to do or what to replace. 2 gallons of gas and a match is my next investment.

I'd like to test the ignitor if possible. As per what Mwebb asked if I get a pulse on the negative side of the coil, no I dont, so I'm thinking something is wrong before the coil.
i have been trying to get you to test those circuits ....
you need to begin with the CMP

if that is good AT the ECM , and you have no output from the ECM to the ignitor , you will have no spark
so by the testing i am asking for i am trying to ascertain where your CMP signal is not getting to or from ....

you are not following instructions and are dancing around willy nilly

you are chasing your own tail - it never works and it gets very frustrating .
this is a simple system ...

if you want my assistance , i will guide you ....

but
you must respond to my requests for information .

we start at the CMP to the ECM
I NEED the voltage value when cranking the starter at the CMP then
at the two PINS on the ECM , just to verify the CMP signal reaches the ECM

ready begin
or
you can continue to chase your own tail .... the choice is yours .
===================================
if you complete the CMP testing and i do not respond for a day or two ...
it would not hurt to voltage drop power and ground to the ECM as per instructions in the "how to" section of this forum

i will respond

this is what we want to see , using a scope
the voltage values for the CMP will be about the same with a DVOM
DO NOT use a DVOM to measure secondary or primary spark

Just so I get this straight. and do these tests properly, I need to make sure I have the location correctly, so I'm testing the right part. The CMP is under the distributor cap with the 2 wires coming out of it?? Also called the Pickup?? Is that correct?

If I am wrong, please let me know where the CMP is, so I can test it. Thanks

Yes. I bet if you slap another distributor in it it will run.

I do have another distributor. I went to the salvage yard and the only way they would sell me the CMP/Pickup was if I bought the whole distributor. I'll change it out and see what happens. Thanks for being patient with me everyone.

I put the other distributor in, lined it all up exactly like the one that came out of it. Now I just need to put the alternator back in and try it.

It's gonna be a while, The alternator I got from the wrecking yard has the wrong pulley on it, and the one of the bad alternator doesn't fit the shaft. Napa doesn't open for another hour and a half.

I'm glad I have this computer in my shop. Makes it easy for me to work and post results quickly. Good thing I can go get :beer while I wait for them to open!

New Alternator is installed, Changed the distributor, still the same. I feel better knowing the alternator is back in there tho. Now I test the cmp. I will post results as soon as I'm done.

OK, I found out I can do this by myself with long enough test leads.... But while it's cranking over I get 0.26 Volts on both wires from the CMP. Mwebb said he wants to me to check the 2 PINS at the ECM to make sure the signal is making it to the ECM. Which 2 pins should I be checking at the ECM?
