I posted awhile back on 94 metro xfi that (after the water pump went out and was replaced) would cut out when shifting in the upper gears. This problem eventually became a constant cycling of the engine even at idle. Scan tool could not read anything so we found a cheap original ecu on ebay and after replacement the car runs well except now has a new problem. It will randomly die when you take your foot off the accelerator-pulling into a parking lot, stopped to make a left turn, even on the interstate at full speed if you take your foot off the accelerator for long enough. It does not die or cut out when shifting during normal driving. Several adjustments have been made to the tps to get it to run more smoothly at the 25mph range where it tends to "buck" and has done so since I bought it. I don't know whether the tps might be faulty or if there is yet another new problem perhaps fuel related and not sure where to start.

ahh fuel pressure? if you've moved the tps it needs to be at the right position to begin further testing look in the how to section on that |

Bucking you say? Have you checked for vacuum leaks? Specifically on the MAP sensor line? |

The TPS does have a setting as Jellybean suggests and starscream5000 is on a good track. mwebb has directions for testing the CranK shaft Position Sensor and Cam Shaft Position sensor. Click HERE. My Geo had the butterfly or Throttle Valve (TV) that was actually sticking (bucking?). Previous Owner messed with it. Apply pressure to the gas pedal and it hesitates/sticks/bucks then opens. IF you were cruising along and took your foot off the throttle the Throttle Valve stuck closed and it could die. The adjustment is on the opposite side of the TB from the TPS (driver's side). The TV is adjusted very minutely with an Allen wrench until it stops sticking. Maybe 1/16 of a turn CW at a time then a short test drive. It will allow more air into the TB at idle. You may have to readjust the TPS and even the idle speed (PO messed with it).

we checked fuel pressure and it was fine and steady but that was at idle. the "bucking" for lack of a better word has only ever occured at a certain rpm, corresponding basically to 25mph in second gear, less so in 3rd. That problem did go away when the tps was adjusted, but now it's got that new problem of dying when accelerator is released (without engaging clutch). I will check for correct setting for tps before proceeding further. |

a question is the tps on the 1994 xfi the same as on the 94 regular metro? I read the howto tps post and not clear if it applies to xfi as well. |

i would set it the same. while not familiar with that model all of the adjustments i have read are the same. have you used seafoam and have you cleaned the throttle plate and seat area just use carb cleaner for initial cleaning keep it running as you don't want to hydrolock it. this may or may not help but its a good thing to do if it hasn't been done |

ok have not done any of those things, just seems like the xfi is very different from the regular metro, different ecu, etc. but if you think the tps adjustments are the same then will go with that and try the seafoam, etc. |

Not aware that the ecu's are different doesn't surprise me though although people here are putting xfi cams in and i doubt they are changing ecu. if you find the idle settings are the same for both models that would help to reassure you. at lest you will know where you are in the setting if someone has different info they will let us know |

The TPS settings are the same for XFi and non-XFi. |
