I had this noise problem a few days ago, it had seem to have gone away. Today im running it in my driveway and the tapping noise is back? It sounds like there isnt any oil getting into the head? So i took the oil cap off while the engine was running just to see if oil would spit out the cover, which it did. I also noticed when i put the tranny in drive the oil light will flicker when the idle drops. The engine is new and i have about 3hrs of idle break in time. Any idea what the problem could be? I dont want to hurt this new engine.

Drain the oil and look for metal. get a mechanical oil pressure check , i'm not sure if there is another port but you can remove temporarily the electrical sender by the exhaust manifold and get a oil gauge to install there to check.a local auto supply should hook you up ..you can "T" it in to make permanent and run the copper line to your dash but you run the risk of hot oil inside if it ever leaks .. did you replace the oil pump? The ticking and light flickering add up to low oil pressure, in this case i would look for the worst first How low is your idle if normal then yes do the checks although light in my three geos never come on when running no matter how low the idle Edited by jellybean, Feb 24 2010, 08:04 PM.

shouldn't be that much if you have alot of metal drop the pan to inspect not good but theres no other help you may save further damage . in bad cases the oil will look silvery like metal flake which it is |

could you post a video off your car running so we can hear the exact sound? unless you've already found the problem. |

long block? i will drain the oil tomorrow then take it form there.Shouldnt there be some metal in the oil since its a new long block? Ill let you know if the noise goes away once i put the new oil/filter in. I hope i dont have any engine damage after all that work.ugh Edited by metropuller, Feb 24 2010, 10:07 PM.

I would get a mechanical oil pressure gauge myself and tap it into the oil switch right above the oil filter and see what the pressure is. |

Ill get one and check it out. if i have low pressure with that gauge its most likely going to be my oil pump? |

Correct. A new oil pump will be needed. The oiling system should be primed after 5 minuted of run time. |

ok thanks i went to try to buy a oil gauge but cant seem to find a store that sells or rents them?I just changed the oil and it wasnt that bad.I started the car and let it run but the noise was still there....i add some oil while the engine was running and the noise went away!So im taking it that i dont have enough oil psi gettin to the head.Ill be search for that oil gauge today???

Is Head gasket warning/Oil pan gaskets a redundant suggestion?
