My gas gage is off ok.

I know that all metros have this history.

Mine is off by approx. 6 gallons. See where im going?

I want to know of a way to fix the gage i have, replace the gage itself, or get hitech

and just get like a digital gage of something and just put it over my dash gage :D .

So help a brother out. Posted Image

Manny posted this topic on How to change a fuel pump. which will give you an idea of what's involved in getting to the sending unit, IF that's the problem.
I have seen some improvement after adding Seafoam to the gas and letting it sit. You could try filling it up, pulling the gauge cluster and resetting the needle to "F" or run it dry and set it to "E." :dunno

Here's a pic of the '96 Dash exploded view. It's parts #21 and #22 that you remove. See two screws next to them in the diagram. It's one reason for owning a stubby screwdriver. ^o) B-)

No in theory you should only have to remove parts #21 to get the cluster out.

you MIGHT have to drop the steering column to make this easier but thats just undoing a few bolts and letting it lower itself a bit. (this is 94 so it might be a TINY bit more complex on a 96 but I doubt by much.

Should not be too hard. The most difficult part is disconnecting the SPEEDO cable.

undo the speedo cable from inside the engine bay straighten it out and give a wee push into the cabin.

this will make pulling it from the inside a lot easier.

Instrument cluster pops right out, I can do it in 20 minutes. One of the many times I took mine out and put it back in, the fuel gauge read about 1/8 inch low, never really went to full and hit empty earlier than before. Next time I pulled and replaced it, it went back to normal operation. I'm assuming bad connection on one of the wiring connectors. I doubt very much that poking at the needle is going to do anything.

If you drop the tank and pull out the pump, you can bend the float rod to make it read different.

OKay Bad Bent thx alot for that gaph could be very useful later.

i knew about the parts #21 but it just looked like the

black plastic that goes all the way to the gages was in

too tight but i'll look at it good later.

guys i wanted to get the vents and gages from the other geo i have and i tried to get them by undoing the dash.

OMFG! :die i couldnt get anything done. i was going to take the steering column w/

the wheel on it and to do that i had to take a metal plate off under it.

2 of the screws tops striped and then i tried to bend it away and succeeded sort of. :die

Then i realised that the column was also connected higher up but i needed a screw driver with six prongs on it like a hex. :die

Then i decided to just takeout the gages and thats as far as i got tonight. :smackface

I took out all the screws i could find from the driver and passenger seats. :thumb

The dash did not budge. This started the most nerve racking time of my automotive life. :die
:smackface
JESUS CHRIST i finally got the gages slightly out then had to pull as hard as

possible to get the temp plug out, :evillol :evillol then the speedometer plug, and after this i lost my cool and just started yanking and cutting wires :die :evillol :banghead :smackface

Then the parts i was actually after the vents, since the dash wouldnt come off

so i figured i could pry it out. Guess what?.. it shattered.

(there is no emote to express my anger fully enough) if my mom wasnt in there room close enough to read the

screen i would fill this page with words that would make your souls scream.

I was so mad i thought i might blow the car up just to get even.

But yes the face plate like part of the driver side vent shattered everywhere.

Now i feel so bad b/c i shattered the plate w/ the light control and the defrost button. they looked brand new until i messed with them. :'( so much for that.

I noticed before i flipped that alot of the screws i needed to get to were screwed in from the direction of the engine bay....this told me i had to get the dash off so that was a big clue that i did wrong.

So glad this geo was in no condition to run. i completely destroyed that section of the dash

as i can figure out how to get my dash apart w/o destroying it like i did the other :'(

its the only thing thats gone right so far...

Hello crackers! Im in a much better mood due :boink

to the fact my destruction of the green geo

was much less than i feared. I did in fact break the panel and stuff :holycrap

but i finally found out how to at least partically remove the dash. :+1

There was still alot of junk to takeoff. :backpack

However the real pain in the butt was two screws one on each side that where

behind the seam of the door frame that went into a bar that ran the :pee length of the dash.

Couldnt fit a screwdriver in there execpt for a very small one.

However i took my buck knife and cut the plastic pieces that the screw

held down . this was pretty much the last step after removing a but load

of screws. now look you guys might do this different but, :dunno i started to put the

dash back on the best i can. As far as i can tell the fact that i did destroy these two pieces has

no effect what-so-ever :thumb on the dash going back on tight.

So if you go to take your dash off in a 96 and around metro

these can be safely cut up. the only resaon that i think that they

were on the car is to make your life miserable :coffee , so you cant take

your own stuff apart :locked and to make you need church or kill someone bad. :evillol

Maybe we didn't make this clear earlier. There is no reason to remove the dashboard, the instrument cluster pops right out.

you made it clear, but mine wouldnt just pop out. it has screws that where holding it in but the reason i took the dash

off: let me say this clearly....

:thumb IS TO GET VENTS!!! :rtfm

wasnt sure if i said that before and on this computer the text is small so i just

made it big and red hope you guys can see it but the gages i have left alone for

now since i got them out along time ago. im just

experimenting with the old car now. :thumb
