I don't think there is a guide for it yet but I just changed mine. You need a 3/8" drive (i.e. a 3/8" socket wrench with no socket on the end) 2.5 Quarts synchromesh fluid and you can also get the special tube at a parts store which screws onto the bottle of synchromesh and allows you to fill your tranny easier. Before you start drive the vehicle around to let the tranny fluid warm up Step 1. Jack the front of the vehicle up and support it with jack stands (or drive it up on ramps) Step 2. Locate the drain plug on the bottom of the transmission it is a 3/8" square drive plug (its an inverted hole, not a regular bolt like the engine oil drain plug. Undo this plug and have a container ready to catch the old fluid. Note: this plug is magnetic so all the metal shavings from the tranny collect on top of it. Clean the metal "goop" off the plug and put it back into the transmission. Step 3. Locate the fill plug which is on the driver side of the transmission near the driver side CV axle. It is the same type 3/8" square drive as the drain plug but has a wide metal cap about the diameter of a poker chip. Remove this and you are ready to refill your transmission. Step 4. Fill the transmission with synchromesh using either the hose or the spout on the bottle itself. You have the correct amount of fluid when the fluid starts coming out of the fill plug hole. Once you have the right amount of fluid replace the cap and you are good to go. Step 5. You are done! Go enjoy your smooth shifting 5 speed! Note: When I did this I could not for the life of myself get that fill plug off. I heard that you should remove the speedo cable from the transmission and fill through there although I couldn't get the fluid to go through that hole and I ended up having to take my instrument cluster out to reattach the speedo cable. What I did instead was remove this cap thingy from the top of the transmission and filling through there. I don't have pictures but it is directly behind where the clutch cable bracket bolts to the tranny. It is a square cap that's about three inches tall. Just note if you take that off you will need to have some rtv gasket silicone to seal it back up when you re bolt it. Hope this helps! |

![]() This is a view from the driver's side looking towards the engine from underneath. First open the fill hole with a 3/8 inch ratchet to make sure you can refill the transmission after you drain it. (I put PB Blaster on both the fill plug and drain plug the day before to help with the removal and had no problems removing either one.) Then, while the engine is warm, open the drain plug using the 3/8 inch ratchet. (you'll need a 3 quart bucket/pan to catch the old oil) Then replace the drain plug (I used teflon sealant), and fill up the transmission via the fill hole. Most transmissions take 2.5 quarts (recommended synchromesh) until it starts overflowing the fill hole. Then replace the fill plug. (more teflon sealant) Edited by Jittney, Mar 3 2010, 02:15 AM.

thanks for the pics ive been struggling to figure out if that was it or not. I didnt want to try messing with it if I coudnt even find the bolt. gonna fix this tomorrow

Important tip: Open the filler hole first. You don't want to drain the fluid only to discover that the filler plug is seized or stripped and that you can't refill the trans, or drive to the store for parts. |

Might I add, one important safety feature is to fill and check your fluids while the car is on level ground.No cheating except for re-filling coolant where you want the radiator neck up with the TB hoses. Nice picture, Jittney.

I did that too...it took me a good 30min to get it off I had to get it off by using a whole bottle of WD40 and using a flat head to slowly scrape all the dirt/grime off. Wish I'd read the whole post lol. |

Great picture Jittney, I would like to add, that not all 5 speed tranny's have the 3/8 inch ratchet fill plug. There are a few tranny's out there that have a bolt type fill plug. Just wanted to mention that, just in case someone is looking for that plug and can't find it

For those of you who are having trouble getting the fill plug out (I understand they may have been loctited into place at the factory), there is another way to fill the transmission, by using the Magic Bolt Hole.

If you used that then I trust it. will be sure to do that. would a 50-100 mile run be enough to clean things up before the drain? ie dump pint in run a 50-100 mile trip then drain and refill? should I refill with 90w first run some more to get all the old stuff and mystery oil out or is run drain and fill with syncro enough? |
