rear hatch strut; cheap end to head banging

here's a cheap fix for sagging rear hatch struts that i copied from my 83 year old father he impressed me with its simplicity and let me know that he still has it going on ,, get a piece of 3/4" plastic pipe cut it approximately 1/2" shorter than the stroke length of your strut, thats the shinny part when extended. then drill a small hole in the flat part of the strut rod as near to the top by the hatch as you can drill and another in the top of the plastic pipe about 1/4" dn.through both sides. unscrew the cylinder at the btm , leave it bolted in and twist the cylinder off the bolted stud.(it's threaded on) slide the plastic on,holes to the top, put a cotter key through the holes you drilled in the plastic and strut, twist the btm back together and you are done.
when you open the hatch the pipe will automatically catch on the cylinder shoulder and you will have to manually center it when you want to close
I thought it would rattle but i have not heard it and i especially like the fact that it didnt cost anyting as the pipe was here.
hope you like it i think its a great geo mod

photobucket.com -> "MY HOME" -> (go to album) -> (locate pic) -> when you scroll mouse ove pic a box opens up entitled "share" locate image code and highlight the text. if you have a pc you can just right click and copy.. if you have a mack just (apple sign+c) to copy it. then come to the reply screen on this forum and right click if you have a pc and select paste. or (apple sign+v) if you have a mac. i hope that works for you.

lol i'll test it to make sure it works... look at this sexy...

sorry but that seems to be all i can get out of photobucket right clicking brings up a list of tabs one of which is share which opens another window with more steps which has ended with a link to post not as easy as everyone indicates and only one at a time

That works. I directly cut and paste the IMG Code directly into a post. The window opens when I move the arrow over the little pics in the album.

don't worry about it man. the link works just as good.

now that i have seen.... the light. it makes sense. good easy fix. and makes it better is its cheap... the question is what will i do with my trusty old man cane holding the hatch up now? Well i guess that decision is for when im not too lazy and build the damn thing.... which prob wont happen im way too lazy.

So how does this keep them from sagging? Mine just swings open and shut the "sticks" that hold the trunk open dont work at all...

Wow! Very clever idea! I replaced mine a while back, but this is much better than a broom stick. A little black spray paint, and no one will notice it.
