I got my first 50 yesterday. 50.11 mpg !! 441 miles on 8.8 gallons of gas!

that made me so frelling happy! Now to see if I can repeat it!

The biggest change I Made was to SLOW DOWN. I tried to keep my max speed at 45mph

I knew in 150 miles I was going to have a huge improvement! normally I get to the 3/4 point at 100 miles this time it was 125!

45mph from now on for me! I am drooling in anticipation! if I can get 50mpg on winter gas what can I get on summer gas! and what can I get if I can figure out a reliable way of getting rid of the ethanol!

DROOLING in anticipation!

Awesome! But I can't drive 45. I have to at least max out at 62 just to not get run over by semis and SUVs on my daily commute of 80 miles round trip, all highway miles. My last two tanks I've averaged 44+, but prior to that I was averaging 50. The car sat for a long time while I was recovering from back surgery, but I also think the cold has something to do with it. I seem to do much better in the summer.

That's about what I do. I drive 55-56 MPH on the bypass (70 MPH limit). I slow down going up the hills, but that's because I use DWL. Going down some of the hills I'll hit 62-63 in anticipation of the next hill. I'm putting about 65 miles on the car each day, mostly driving on the bypass. I got around 53.6 MPG on the last tank, but this time will be much less because I took off my exhaust silencer and lost a lot of much needed low end torque. I'll not be surprised if I get 48 MPG on this tank because of that...

Really, where I live if you're going 65, you'd better be in the far right lane, or they'll just push you out of the way. I've had people pass me on the right shoulder of a four lane highway when I was going 65.

I live in a rural area, so the road is pretty much empty when I drive. Every now and then there will be a pack of 5-6 cars that will be coming up behind me. They just get over in the left lane and go about their way. As far as I can tell no one ever gets pissed about my speed. The cops don't seem to care around here either. As long as you aren't speeding they pretty much ignore you. If someone did ever have a problem with it they be on the wrong end of the conversation with my P95 and I'm not afraid to use it either (open carry state here).

Same here very little "fast traffic" its all 2 lane (one each direction) roads and may "back country" style roads. I found a route that has the fewest lights and lightest traffic.

Even on the freeway if its light traffic I slow down to 50mph but I notice if I REALLY travel on the freeway IE a long distance 45-55 does not seem to have as much of an impact on FE.

On my route to work the ENTIRE ROUTE is 50mph speed limit anyway (a few spots are 45 and 1 4 mile stretch is 55mph) so I am not too far off the actual speed limit anyway.

I did the math. it takes almost exactly 3 more minutes to get to work.

so 1:20 gets me 45mpg while 1:23 gets me 50mpg

easy decision :-) hehe

if a string of cars is looking to come up behind me I pull onto the shoulder and let them pass if that can not be done safely I bump it up to the speed limit till the next passing zone. (as much as I want to save gas I also do not want to piss people off without any real need too) I want to be considerate and save money :-)

If I manage to built a boat tail like metrompg did then maybe I can stay at 50mph speed limit and still get over 50mpg.

I am hoping that maybe with summer gas AND removing the ethanol AND some aero mods that maybe I can touch that elusive 60mpg :-)

My weapon of choice on ragers is my trust Canon XTI

100% success rate at "instantly" deflating road rage :-) its truly shocking its literally better than a GUN :-) hehe Something about having your picture taken while your being an ass just "snaps" people out of it :-) One of these days I will mount a small video camera to the XTI so you can SEE the "change" in a rager when I do this :-)

That is one thing the Metro has done for me, keep my speed down. I don't ever break 60 mph on purpose. Now I only have two speeding tickets to fall off my record.

I thought the XFI was better on gas. I can roll 60mph & get 50mpg. But I was running 12" tires, good plugs & wires, oil. Car had approx. 118,000 miles on last trip. I have gotten 56mpg by using higher octane & slowing down to 55mph. 1993 HB 1.0 5SPD

yeah but you get gasoline where you live.

I get E10 with NO OPTION for gasoline. all my cars lost 15% to 25% of their fuel economy on the switch to E10.

From the factory this car got 53 city 58 highway. I think I finally have a way to remove the Ethanol from the gasoline. I am going to try it in the coming weeks and see what happens.

I should also see a 5mpg boost when summer blend returns (odd in the past I never saw a difference between summer blend and winter blend FE until E10) I am assuming 5mpg since thats about what I lost when we went to winter blend

I went from 47-48mpg to 43-44mpg (this increase lately is driving changes)

Fingers crossed.

i guess im really lucky.i puchased my 92 metro about a year ago and after changing oil to synthetic, trans to synthetic.average 50-54mpg.i drive 35mph for 3 miles,55mph for 8 miles and 35mph again for 3 more miles 1 way to work.a steep 8% hill for 2.5 miles in the mix,55mph 4th gear going up and basically coasting down the other side so i guess it evens out.grand total both ways 28 miles.i should do better now since i changed plugs, wires, cap and rotor.i run regular gas like shell and every 3-4000 miles i add amsoil PI[performance improver]seems to help so i will update as time goes on.kind of fun messing with these cars.i was chomping at the bit for the snow to melt and be able to drive it.she sat for 4 months of the winter.to much snow.shes been going for 2 weeks now.

Nope not lucky. You just live in nevada where you get REAL gasoline (last I checked nevada was not heavy on the E10 yet)

They handle pretty fine in the snow with decent tires just watch gusting. I had it actually "PUSH" me sideways 3 or 4 feet before I got the nose turned into the wind and stopped it! let me tell you that is one of the FEW times weather gave me "alarm" in a car :-)
