Regularly, they would have commercials with doctors recommending that smoking would reduce stress in your life, and provide other benefits. Ah the good old days eh. Booze up and smoke up and you have no worries (and if you followed that plan, you really probably weren't worried about much up to and including getting shot) In more recent studies done, they did actually find that smoking provided one benefit (kind of) in that people that smoked while doing something were able to concentrate for longer periods of time on a given task and performed it better than people not smoking. Of course, if the smokes were taken away, that same groups concentration fell through the floor. Go figure.

There's a lot of truth to the stress reduction thing, there are mental health benefits that aren't factored in, but you're right, they used to claim it soothed your throat for crap's sake. I'm a smoker, and 52 years old.
