So I changed the trans fluid with syncromesh and added a cone air filter to the geo. I also cut the bad exhaust off at the glass pack and noticed it drove much much better. I didnt have time to make any of the guides I wanted to make... So after I changed the trans fluid I went out for a test drive...and guess what. I forgot to tighten the lug nuts back down. F! I pulled over right as the the wheel fell off and relized my lugs were gone...and my jack was half a mile away. I walked back home and got my jack and had to take one lug off of my other wheels. The threads were all ruined.F! I forced them on and limped home. After relizing the "spare" lugs that came with the car were stripped too. F! I limped over to Orilleys and told them what happened. I had to buy 4 new lug kits. I had an hour to get the damn thing apart so I could take my gf to work. (50 miles away) F! I started taking it all off, I borrowed tools to get everything off. Had to use the tire to lock up the front brakes and eventually got the thing off by using 2 bottles of PJ lube stuff. The whole thing is all rusted together. I stripped a bolt and was lucky enough to know the manager who let me borrow his diamond cutting socket set. It cut into the bolt and I managed to get it off. After smacking the cover off (and hitting the freakin rotor twice) I got the parts. Then the store closed. The owners were nice enough to stay and wait for me to finish. I have to go back and pay for the PJ stuff. I bought the parts when I first got there. 25 bucks b/c all he had was the nice chrome lugs. I made it in time, got my girl to work, then went home and passed out for 4 hours before getting up to drive out, get her, bring her home, and come back to school. (about 50 to 60 miles each way) It seems to be holding up ok. I need to tork everything today so that I know its safe...Im getting new tires in 2 days so I might just have the shop double check everything. Lesson Learned: Tighten the F'in Lug Nuts. |

I had that happen when I was young. I was driving a 1975 Firebird, had a flat, and put on the spare. Kept hearing this noise from the rear everytime i let off the gas. I continued to accel and decell and it got worse and worse and worse ....................

LOL, I had close to the same thing, my dad had a 60 model gmc truck and he let me do the brake job on one side of his truck on the front. Well did the brakes and also packed the wheel bearings. Put the job back together but forgot to put the washer on the bearing back on. Needless to say, somehow he made it to work the next day (because he did not work very far and back home, walked in the door and said son something is wrong with the truck it is making a noise on the side you did. Looked on the ground and there was the washer. Needless to say, had to do it all over again. Atleast he made it home without it running off on him. Never had a lug nut problem, but when I worked for Roadway they used to have a lot of run off tires because mechanics would not jam down on them trailer lugs. Mostly I go the other way, I over tighten and thats not good either.

Years ago I had a Thunderbird SuperCoupe and I removed the front wheel to inspect the brakes. I put it back together and had this knocking sound. Come to find out, yes, I didn't tighten the lug nuts all the way. The real bummer was I missed out on a dyno day because I didn't feel safe driving the car with the knock/wobble.

If you get alloy wheels, you need to recheck them a few hundred miles later. Glad you didnt screw up the wheels or get a tire caught up in your fender or drive up and over your own tires. |

Dude that sucks... I feel for ya man. Three times I have forgotten to tighten my lugs. Thank Jebus I only went a few feet down my drive way and noticed the noise and got out and tightened them. In fact pretty much every time I do work on my car I forget SOMETHING.

I used to have a old 51 Ford. I swapped tires with a guy and didnt tighten the lugs. There was a pretty long bridge on my way home. It had a long sweeping curve just before the bridge. It was about 2 am and I was moving on , when in the middle of the curve I saw a wheel got by. Yep it was mine. I slid to a long spark producing stop and quickly grabbed the spare as my wheel went right into a dock where there were a lot of boats. I could just see my tire in someones wheel house. While I was jacking and sweating a group drunks came up. They wanted to help me find the wheel. I got the spare on and limped home. I never did find the wheel, of course I never when back to look for it.

I walked back home and got my jack and had to take one lug off of my other wheels. The threads were all ruined.
