1997 GEO Metro; Car quit

I'm new here, and this is my first post.

My 1997 GEO Metro quit running. When the engine died, at 50 mph, I noticed that the "ignition light", "air bag", "service engine soon lights" were not displaying. Engine turns over, but does not fire. Put some gas in the carb and does not fire. All other lights, wipers, radio and signal lights work. What should I check?

Have someone crank the motor over while you are under the hood looking into the valve cover through the oil filler cap. Check to see if the camshaft is turning as the person in the car is cranking it over.

If it is not, then the timing belt broke on you.

I took the round rubber cap on the timing belt cover off, and the timing belt doesn't seem to be broke. Could it be slipping? Nobody around at this time to turn the car over.

I took that rubber cap back off, and marked it with chalk and the belt is turning.

Some say...

Did you check to see if the belt has just jumped a tooth? Do you have a timing light? Have you checked for spark at all cylinders?

Kinda basic but worth a try: check all your fuses. If they are fine then have a look at the coil, any breaks in the wires? Also check the wires from the distributor.

Wait, did you say that you don't get any lights in the cluster? Do you get a chime when you turn the key to run (not start and not the door open chime)? Can you hear the fuel pump run? Dollars to donuts one of the main fuses blew. I'm talking about those colorful ones under the hood, not under the dash.

And the wiring to the fuse boxes in the engine bay....

Thanks everyone. I just checked the computer to see what was recommended. Will try solutions tomorrow. Have 2 friends who just stopped out and they are forcing me to drink beer. What could I say?

Ok, beer break. There is a chime when the door is open, but nothing when it's closed and I turn it over. Nothing in the "cluster". How can you tell if a fuse is blown. What does a blown fuse look like.

Here is a random pic I found on the web:

See the ones that say 25A, 30A, 45A and 75A, those are the main engine fuses (this pic is for a Nissan, but it has some relevance. I'm on campus so I don't have access to my camera). Notice the shiny copper strip in the center of the fuses covered with clear plastic? If you see one where the copper strip is missing, burnt or broke you more than likely found the problem. Also remember that some of these fuses are BOLTED in and won't pull out. You need to remove the bolt under the fuse to release it. Also disconnect the battery while doing this for obvious reasons.

I know this is kinda basic too, but is the wire from the coil to the Distributor in tact?
