Engine swap; Can't give it any throttle

We took the engine out of my 2000 Chevy Metro, cause the frame rotted out at the control arms. We put it in another one i bought from Florida. It's a 1995 Geo Metro. The engine swap went fine, it starts right up and idles. But you can't give it any gas, it just boggs down, and tries to backfire thru the carb. My brother noticed that the 2000 has a crank trigger, and the 95 does not, so it is not hooked up in it now. Would that have anything to do with it? The engine we took out ran like a champ! I put 30,000 miles on it in 6 months. Any help would be great!!! Thanks, Randy.

This vehicle should not have a carburator! A 2000 would have a obd-II system while the 95 did not. You should have put it in a 96 thru 2000.

You will have to swap over the oil pump, oil pan, and crank sensor to the 95 engine for it to work. Also do not use an oil pan gasket, just RTV silicone.

Good luck!

It May "LOOK" like a carb, but it is really throttle body injection. :smackface It is a common mistake I've seen on here a few times. :news JM is right. swap these parts and you should be fine. :thumb

IMHO if you are getting backfire then your timing is off. My 350 Chevy did that once.
This could be related to the missing crank sensor. I put a newer engine in both the '91 and '96 and had to keep the respective intakes, sensors etc. with the car year. For instance the '91s intake manifold had no EGR so I could not use the newer intake manifold. :-/

The 2000 engine, is in the 95 model Geo. So the engine does have the crank sensor on it, but no wires to hook it up. I should not have said it was backfiring thru the carb, I meant to say the air cleaner. The engine runs good, there was nothing wrong with it before we swapped them out.

Big John he put the 2000 engine in the 95. You told him to put the pump and stuff on the 95 engine. Your 2000 engine is trying to run on obd-I when in fact it is obd-II.

Ah! My bad. You need to use the intake manifold from the 95 on that engine.

Ah! My bad. You need to use the intake manifold from the 95 on that engine.
Or the wiring harness and ecu and exhaust from the 2000.

You also need the distributor from the 95, different control system, you're probably not getting any advance.

You have to make the engine run on one of two computers, obd-I or obd-II. Currently your car has the obd-I ecu therefore you will have to change your sensors around on your 2000 engine for it to run right. This is the problem you run into putting differant year setups in other vehicles. If you could find a 96 to 2000 it should work fine like it was in your 2000.
