I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Bogs plays old time banjo, as I do.

Who else plays ? Anything, especially acoustic instruments.

I bought a nice banjo one time because I love to hear someone play. Never leared to play. Little did I know its the hardest instrument to play. Gave it away. Roy Clark is the man!

Yup, old timey banjo (well, if you count beatles and elvis as banjo type music), and guitar. Wife plays guitar and piano better than I could ever hope to. Can't carry a tune if it had handles :lol

Yes, welcome aboard Ryemonkey! And welcome to that other elite club, Oldtime Banjos Anonymous.

You know, playing the banjo is a lot like driving a Geo - it marks you as a special case. Thats why Geo owners (and banjo players) must hang together. Most people like the sound of a banjo, but very few take the trouble to learn how to play one.
Just like most people gripe about fuel prices, but would never consider driving a metro. That's my thoughts........

Greetings and Salutations Ryemonkey,
Welcome to our humble home,
Come on in and set a spell.
I don't play Banjo myself, I am a brass man.
Started on Tuba, went to Baritone, moved to Trumpet, Cornet, French Horn, and finally Trombone (slide and valve).
I haven't picked up a horn in years though, so don't ask for any solos.

On a side note;
over a year ago, when gas was around $4.00 a gallon.
I was walking into Walmotopia and passed a woman in her Hummer H1, window down, A/C on, engine running, talking on her cell.
AND
Complaining about the price of gas!
I laughed so hard on the way to the door I had tears down my face, the greeter thought I had been crying and asked if I was O.K.

I played the baritone myself in high school. The irony of it was there was four of us who did and one girl amongst us. She was the best baritone player. Didnt bother to learn the banjo much cause my fingers are short and stubby and a man really needs long skinny fingers to play looks to me like.

All this reminds me of the first year of band. Our instructor had everyone buy just the mouthpieces. He was taking a differant group every week and teaching them how to blow on the mouthpieces alone. Well this week he was working with the clarinets. They blew on them reeds and it sounded terrible. Well I hollered out like the fat mouth I was and said oh that sounds beatiful! Well that got me a couple of licks right up in front of the whole band class! Oh how my butt stayed red in school. Oh well those days are over, no red butts anymore. Could that be whats wrong in todays society? Or part of it anyway.

Suprisingly enough, a lot of people watch say, Roy Clarke play, and say "meh, I can't play because" insert reason here, fingers, dexterity, etc.

My fingers are neither long nor thin nor filled with dexterity. I can't play as well as someone thats dedicated themselves to playing, but I play well enough for my own amusement and the entertainment of a few others (when I bring it to work, for instance). Playing any instrument is always what you put into practicing = what you get out.

Roy Clark had nothing to do with my staying power to learn how to play. I grew up watching Roy Clark play all kinds of instruments and he is truly a gifted muscian.

Many years ago, I saw an interview with maybe Merv. They introduced Roy Clark. They BS'd for a bit then Merv brought out a toy ukalayie. (sorry) It was made of plastic. Merv was funning him. Roy picked it up, tuned it for a minute. Then got down, playing Malaguainia. One of the toughest songs to play. Murv was bummed out. Roy just smiled and played on
