hi, MY 1994 METRO WITH 3 CYL with ST. SHIFT acts as though it is running lean when you push on the gas to accelerate, it wil bog down but when you pump the gas pedal it will immediatly pick up speed. some times it seems as though the timing is off. any one know what would cause this? thanks, ron |

my car did the same thing and it ended up that i had a bad valve. i recommend doing a compression test.. but there are lots of other things it can be. how many miles are on it? has it been sitting? how long have you owned it for. etc but i would do a compression test right off the back. sounds exactly like what my car did. good luck.. hope im wrong. |

Welcome to the forum, ron750! Pump the pedal, could also be the TPS, fuel filter, your timing could be off... yada, yada, yada. The compression test will tell a lot; How to Compression Test. |

thanks for the replys i'm leaning towards a timing issue with it i just haven't taken time to check it out. when i first bought it it had three burnt valves due to an oil burning problem that plugged the egr valve passage with carbon. i replaced the valves and rings and solved that problem. i also found out that when the egr valve sets a code that there is a good chance that the passage is plugged . thanks agsin , ron |

hey ron, have you done a compression test since the rebuild to see if the piston rings have seated? have you checked your distributor timing? what is your timing at? advancing it a couple degrees from the standard 5 also helps in preventing carbon build up.. also if you have assembled the engine with the timing belt off one tooth it will have similar issues. let us know what you find! good luck! |

Does your car have the check engine light on now? I would test the tps. |

If you think its running lean, what do your spark plugs say? Are they black as tar, or burnt white? Black is to rich, bright white is to lean. |

mines is doing the same thing, i put new wires, cap , distributor, plugs, filter, engine compression test is good 190-200 on all, replaced pcv valve, egr valve is not clogged and it is not throwing any codes... but timing could be off due to the timing cover was not on properly when i received the car from owner and may be off a tooth. took manifold off not clogged "needed new seal anyway... but the hesiation is a problem but it revs up just fine. |
