Forgot His Manpurse

I would hope they are still in the class. :p If 1.0s were all by its own class, that would be strange.

Thanks for replies guys. The class we're put in is strictly arbitrary, and at the judges whim. It would be very unlikely to be put in any class other than C ("ugly") if you're in a Metro (unless your sporting a big engine swap or some cheaty turbo). Having said that, we're gonna try to get these "semi-basic" things done and get the car running well be early April.

Speaking of that, we had been emailing Mike at 3tech and then for the last week we haven't been able to get a response. We've got the head packaged and all ready to ship off. Anyone know a better way to get a hold of him than email? I found the number listed in his .pdf file, but didn't want to call him over the weekend.

Finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We're baaaaaaaaack!!!!!

Well, let's see... Where to start?

We have this car, with a beat down engine with minimal horsepower.

Posted Image

It's in need of an upgrade. So we decided to pull the head and send it off to Mike at 3tech and send the TB of to George at MaxBore.

Here's some pics to illustrate the head removal.

Artsy pic to start

Getting to work

Head off with valve cover off

Different view, it needs some work

Another view

Closer view prior to rebuild - Thanks Mike for the pics.
Posted Image

EGR valve needed some TLC
Posted Image

Bottom end prior to reassembly - we didn't touch it. It had been rebuilt less than 2000 miles ago.
Posted Image

Skip forward a few steps to save bandwidth - and newly rebuilt head is sitting in the engine bay!

New timing sprocket, +10.

Jump forward a few more steps, and getting complete!!

Reassembly Complete!!!!

Sweet looking head. Mike did a good job.

One question though, on a pic of the bottom of the head it looked like there were some metal shavings appearant. Have you any idea what caused that?

Good luck in the future. Your project inspires a lot of folks on GMF.

Well posting an update wouldn't be sufficient for a rebuild without including a video now would it!?

Title this one "sumfin's not right"

A little timing adjustment and some tinkering ensued.

Title this one "ahhh that's better".

Well... We're not the brightest bulbs in the box. So a few questions all of you probably will know, but we don't.

1) We have timing set at +10 (based upon what we could see today). What should we be at?

2) Idle remained at 1500 RPMs. Prior to rebuild, cam, sprocket, TB it was around 800 RPMs. Is this normal?

We have not done any road tests yet. It was snowing today, and the car has no windows and high perf summer tires. We will fill up with 93 octane (tank is about empty).

3) Are we blithering idiots and hopeless?

make yourself some headers! 3X 1.25" pipe 32" long to a 3 to 1 collector will give you good exhaust scavenging and is tuned for 5K RPM, would probably compliment your new bored TB nicely!
How does it run now?

I see what you're saying. Mike really said the head looked in pretty good shape, and I don't remember any metal shavings. Maybe it's the picture?

Thanks for the kind words. We have been helped waaaaaaaay more than helping anyone in this forum... that's for sure.

We're not gonna do any headers.. at least right now. At least I don't think we will. :hmm Car sounds great though. Not sure how it runs for sure, as no road tests yet due to snow today :shake

High idle is caused by a vacuum leak somewhere or maybe the throttle was turned up pior to you getting the car.

Thanks Johnny... We actually discussed a vacuum leak, but looked and didn't see anything obvious. Any "typical spots" newbies like us might mess up?

Idle was fine prior to rebuild, so that shouldn't be it. We also checked throttle cable just to make sure it wasn't hung up, but it seemed fine.

Again.. we're first timers, so thanks for patience.
