Well... This is really "Lemonish" (verb to describe crappy solutions to easy problems), but we have a tach from a 6 cylinder (car came with no tach). So we typically have let her wind out to "3000 RPM" which should be actually 6000 RPM. With the old engine we never felt like we got much additional acceleration past 6K. When I drove it here, I was being somewhat gentle in not letting it rev out higher, but it did feel like there coulda been additional benefit from letting her run out more. What is the redline in these cars? We will beat the piss out of an engine if we know its reliable, but in the past we were worried .so we've always shifted at 6K (and never once needed 4th gear in a race). Thanks again for Mike's help at 3Tech. Great guy to work with.

Should be good for a 7000 fuel cut, so 3500 on your tach. 7k+ won't hurt these motors. You have no worries there, so wind it up as far as it makes power (and test your tach for accuracy on the rev limit), and shift there. |

You do know there are cheap tach solutions out there right? |

The tach we're using was free. What 3-cyl tach did you have in mind? I'm all for optimizing accuracy at a reasonable price. |

That is cheap, and looks like it would be easy to use, but it might be hard to see when we're racing. If it would just light up red at a pre-defined shift point, it would be perfect. |

Just drive it into the rev limit, learn where it is, and shift when it feels like you're not making power anymore. I never use a tach when racing . |

3Tech is right. The seat of your pants will know when to shift. I have a Glow Shift tac in the Rocket and the Dark Starr. Its about $40. And they sell a cheapo universal fiber glass pillar mount. Works great. Its a 2" tach. And works on the 3cly no trying to do math when you are charging a corner hard. LOL I will see if I can find the link. Your project looks great guys. I wish mine was working half as well as yours. Lets see if this works. This is the one I am using. http://www.glowshiftdirect.com/tinted2tachometer.aspx Looks like it worked. Who knows, tell them you are racing to raise money to help kids and they might sponser you one with a pillar mount.

Thanks guys. My other car is a '99 Miata that is track prepped, and I can easily tell when to shift without the tach. At RoadAmerica I would be bouncing off the rev-limiter in 4th at the end of the front straight as it made no sense to grab 5th. I can always tell by the pitch of the motor and feel of the car as to when to shift. The Metro was more difficult last year, as it just didn't seem to want to accelerate past 6K. The pitch seemed constant from roughly 5500 rpm and higher. So we just decided to arbitrarily set 6K as our shift point. I would say now there is plenty of power just to let it rev to the limit. We're excited to see what it can do. I think we'll just keep our 6cyl tach and go at it.

BB uses a sunpro model for his 3 cyl with large face on it, there are others though. Going through my tach install thread, I came up with these : 1.) Equus 6086, O'Reilly's carries it for 29.99. It has settings on it for 1-10 cylinders (Feb 13 2011) 2.) BB's tach (you'd have to pm him for info about it ) ![]() 3.) I believe BB also at one time had a Glowshift ? 4.) Blue Digital for 16. on ebay, all engine cyl. counts Should be enough to get you started but, as 3tech points out, when your butts in the seat that may actually be the best measure. |

That spoiler on the roof looks to me like 100% drag and 0% benefit. Front dam looks great. |

I agree the rear spoiler has no aero benefit. Have to remember that part of the fun of Lemons is having cars look the part. We show up with a car that "looks to well put together", then we might get BS (Bull$hit) penalty laps. If they mention our front aero, then I can just point to our "pointless rear spoiler".
