It's got the stock 5 speed. We've discussed changing gear ratios. It was a big step to do a head/cam for us. We don't have easy access to a lift, so we haven't been real jazzed about tranny/clutch/flywheel work. Yet. :)

The engine and tranny can come out as one piece with a cherry picker. The engine (less manifolds/alt/tranny) can be lifted out and installed by one person who can curl 120 pounds. B-)

I was thinking they could get a shorter final drive, and get some device to bypass the rev limiter. Considering the new cam and all.

They've already got the shortest final drive, the '95+ 3 cylinder cars came with the 4.39

You're missing the 500 dollar budget thing.

Precisely why I followed it no further. I'd forgotten they had a budget.
Now the question is. What happens if they were to have it donated to them?

Doesn't work like that, they can get their car crushed if it looks like they spent more than 500.

Quite kind of you to offer. We are actually quite spoiled. One team member has a new F250 diesel, and also a 32ft-ish enclosed trailer with all the gadgets.

We have all kinds of tools. We're even lucky enough to have a full time mechanic on our team.

A couple of our drivers have extensive setups for their own personal race cars, so we are waaaaay more fortunate than most Lemons teams.

Thanks again. I love this forum!

Yeah.. The $500 budget is an issue. But there is also some "wriggle-room". Showing up with a 96 stock metro without forced induction with aftermarket final drive gear won't cause the judges to get their panties in a bind.

There have been metro's done up like ShoGuns with a SHO 6-cylinder swapped into the back of the car running rear wheel drive, and because the swap was so outlandish the car didn't even get any penalty laps. Let alone getting crushed.

So.. no worries on the final drive gear issue. Honestly, it may be more than we want to mess with.

Even with a full time mechanic (who actually didn't help with head swap... us morons did it :)), we are really time limited. All of us have careers or jobs that don't allow much side time to work on the car.

Right now, due to some rule changes for cage construction, we're having to re-do a portion of the cage. So that is our current #1 priority, as it is required to pass tech. :thumb
