...Both of my computers at home (where most of my pics are) have been destroyed by a dreaded Vista update (thanks Microsoft), and are finally going to come back to life....
That Dam# "Vista Virus" strikes again.
Glad I had my computer cleaned with XP.

I apologize for my absenteeism... You guys HAVE to watch this...

LemonAid Omaha weekend Summary Video

And this.... She's one mean Metro!!!!

The "one liter can of whoopa$$ is on the track at LeMons!!!"

So here's the quickest summary of the whole weekend I can give...

We show up Friday at 9 AM. Car is in the enclosed trailer. We unload, and get to meeting our neighbors. By noon we take the car to tech inspection. By this time, several teams had come by and remarked how great the car looked (and how we should breeze through tech inspection).

Tech goes great except.... cage isn't gonna pass tech. Our 45 degree main stays off the main hoop attached to a cross bar at the strut towers. Then, two small support tubes came down from the cross bar to just inside the hatch on the floor. The tubes weren't in the same plane at the 45 degree main stays (just slightly off on an outer angle), and needed to be in the same plane. No one has a 120V welder, only a 220V welder. We have no welder. Fark n A!!!! We don't get the cage fixed, and we don't pass tech. We don't pass tech, we don't race. We don't race, and the HUGE publicity in our home town is all for naught. One team member remembers there is a large John Deere dealership just down the road, and I decide to drive the Metro down to the dealership. There we talk to the shop foreman who agrees to correct the cage, and do it immediately, and do it as a donation to our charity!!!!

3 hours later we pass tech and take some practice laps.. and she runs like a champ.

The following morning the race started at 10AM. Our first two laps don't record (transponder dead), and after a quick transponder change (donated to us by the LeMons staff) we're counting laps! After the first hour we're in 14th out of 30. 2nd hour - 12th. 3rd hour - 10th. 4th hour - 8th overall. The car is running great, and actually handles quite well (I can discuss what we did to suspension later). So after my 1 hour session, our next driver goes out. 10 mins into his session he spins, and draws a black flag. We buy our way out of it (donation to another charity), and we're back on the track in a minute. Then, just 20mins later, he spins again. This is our 3rd spin of the day (3rd Black Flag too). The only choice is to impound the car for 3hours. At this point it is about 4pm, and Sat track time ends at 7:30pm. We decide to park her for the day. At the end of Saturday we had dropped to 21st overall and 4th in our class ("the ugly" - expected worst cars in the race).

Sunday Am we start on time, and car continues to run flawlessly. We claw our way back to 17th overall, and 2nd in our class. Overall, we're quite pleased. Had we not had our off track adventures, we would have finished about 7th overall and 1st in our class.

We learned that you don't need brakes to road race a Metro (we hardly used them).

We also learned that you can develop a love affair with a car. Good times.... Good times....

No, it has absolutely NO power, but luckily all of us come from a background of driving "momentum" cars. We were getting absolutely every last ounce out of that car. To give you perspective, there were cars with 2.5x the horsepower to weight ratio of our car, and they were only averaging about 4s a lap faster.

We knew it would be doggedly slow, and we love it for that attribute. We may be approaching 3tech soon. Depending upon our residual value from this race, turbocharging this car may even be a possibility. Then you risk reliability for acceleration.

You can see how I made up time on that Lincoln Mark VIII in the corners, it just had 5x the HP we did. I mean.. We were passing RX-7's with a Metro!!!! That's really rediculous...

You can also see even though I had a much greater corner exit speed than that orange Paseo, it took the WHOLE straight to get my pass done. We were talking, if we could get 100HP out of that engine, we could win the whole shabang.

I would suggest a 1998+ 4 cylinder for more power.

55hp vs 75hp
58lb/ft vs 77lb/ft

With a cam, exhaust, intake, and a higher gearing...you'd be gold. I think guys at TeamSwift are hitting 110 with that setup...

*I have no idea how much budget you have though. And as long as Lemons doesn't know yours didn't come with a 4 cylinder...
