Here is a thread where we can talk about guns without being off topic (this was requested by iamgeo in the Onboard Toolbox thread). We (wife and I) have CWPs and have several guns for self/home defense and a couple to use as toys to plink around with at the range. At home I use an old Savage bolt action 20 gauge (sawed off), a Mossberg 850 pump 12 gauge riot gun and a semi-auto Remington 1100 12 gauge (sawed off) for defense. When we are out of the house we both carry Keltec P32 mouse guns. For target practice I use a Walther P22 and a Ruger 10/22. I go to the range about 4 times per month with a friend where we shoot a brick of 22 ammo (maybe 400-500 rounds) for fun. I am a big fan of the Keltec P32 for concealed carry. I like the fact that I can slip it in the front pocket of my blue jeans and I always have it with me. I do not like gun snobs who think you can only carry a .45 for self defense when most of them leave their gun at home or in the car because it is too heavy to actually carry. I understand that a 357 magnum packs a larger punch than a 32acp but there is no way I will carry something that big with me all the time. http://www.lightweightmiata.com/projects/boomstick/ http://www.lightweightmiata.com/projects/p32/ ![]() Me shooting my "grenade launcher" (trying to hit that barn type building - kept shooting too high): Edited by rmcelwee, Mar 31 2010, 07:24 AM.

You want to take down the target as fast as you can. Now, assuming we have PERFECT aim, I would really like a .22 and only hit headshots, but we don't live in a perfect world. Buy a holster, you can't pull a gun out of your pocket nearly as fast as you can a holster, unless you wear really weird pants. Have you ever had to use your gun? I would rather have a gun a little too big and it be enough than be killed wishing that I had a gun to do the job. I don't want this to turn into an epic .45 vs thread, so I will end with this. If you are positive that you can hit where you need to, buy any gun you want, they will all do the job. EDIT: You have some cool shotguns. Edited by Coche Blanco, Mar 31 2010, 06:03 PM.

KY is an Open Carry state, so I don't need a CWP. I carry a Ruger P95 on my side with a hogue grip for comfort. Mine's the Decocker model, fully blued.

How hard is it to get the cwp? Then what about crossing countys, cities and states? I like to keep my job options open and want a cwp in case I go into security as many require it. Id love to carry a gun, but hear horror stories of truck drivers who get pulled for traffic infraction and the gun gets them locked up as that county wont honor the others permit. |

i had a kel-tec for a while, but got rid of it after a few months. i don't know about your experience with them, but mine jammed at least twice out of every box of ammo fired (2/50) regardless of brand of ammo. it was very light and small and i carried it in an in the pants holster in the small of my back. (i had a CCP in georgia, but i let it expire when i moved to ohio) |

I have a Sig Sauer Mosquito .22 cal. Looks and feels like a real gun (close to the size of a real gun; many .22 guns are small.) Mine is black with a nickle slide. I like to shoot a lot, and normal ammo would get too pricey. One drawback for the mosquito is it is finicky, and likes to shoot the more expensive cci mini-mags. |

and to respond to coche blanco (from onboard toolbox thread) Coche, i think you read my post wrong. i said i liked my baretta, not that it was more intimidating than another weapon and to think of dirty harry's gun, not that it was dirty harry's gun. my point was that it looks very similar and VERY intimidating. makes anyone want to crap themselves if ever looking down the barrel. and i believe a 44 magnum isnt as powerful as a .50 cal desert eagle, but not sure. |

CW carry is a glock G29 10mm- abit clunky, but plenty there if I were to ever need it. as far as home protection Mosseburg 590 with tac-lite and ghost ring sights. The sound alone is enough to send them runnning. But in all reality the best home defense is my Jindo dog. Mellow when she has to be------ ready to give her life if she needs to. we have a Cairin Terrier that does most of the spotting, but when the muscle is needed - she is there. We live in an rual area with 5 acres backed up to somepower lines. At one time we had some meth dealers 2 parcels down. My nieghbors were broken into, but we never had a problem. |

ANY gun makes someone want to crap themselves. I don't want anything pointed at me, I cringe when a paintball gun is pointed at me. I'm sure there are TONS of guns more powerful, so i'm not sure what we're getting at then. |

My arsinal consists of a winchester model 60 (I think) single shot bolt action .22 that I use durring squrel season a marlin lever action 30-30 with a 3x9 tasco scope for deer, a Remington 870 pump 12 gua. For bird hunting. (Witch reminds me that spring gobler season is comming in soon.) A Daisy power line 856 .177 for vermin arround my liveing area and that I carry in the car on trips. barrowed from dad. Ruger mini 14 .223 with 30 round mag for groundhogs and other vermin out on the farm ( great gun to carry on the tractor) and for fun shooting I use his ruger mark 2 .22 hand gun, and his S&W 357 mag 6" barrell that's been modified with ppc sights and a diffrent stock. Now that I'm 21 I'm makeing plans to get my own 357 just like his. And a simi auto of some type...probably a 45 or a 9mm since you can buy the rounds in military surplus. Also would like to get a 308 m1 garand or a 6mm for long range deer hunting (2-500 yards where as the dirty 30 only reaches out to 200 accurately) Oh and I have a simi auto paint ball gun for shooting people. (In a safe enviroment and we all are wearing masks |

Not steping on toes I've shot most all of the popular sizes of hand guns and to me the 44 mag has been played out too much, too much recoil I think. But as far as balistics go the 44 actualy has some big brothers. The 41 mag witch actualy has more pwer than a 44 mag used to be the most powerfull handgun. Untill the S&W 500 came out... and lemmie tell you that thing shoots sweet compaired to a 44 mag only down fall is 5 shots instead of 6. And its extreamly intimadateing with the muzle break on it. But hey to each his own. |

Yes, it is harder to pull it out of my pocket than it would be a holster (it is actually in a holster inside my pocket). It is not the perfect place to carry it but it feels like a cell phone in there (comfortable) and for me it still comes down to knowing that I will have it if I ever need it. I practice pulling it and firing 3 quick shots from waist level (shooting from the hip and not aiming). I can hit 3 shots center chest in a VERY short time. Will I be able to do this when presented with a threat? I have no idea but at least I will have my gun, it will be loaded, and I will know how that I have practiced with it. For me it is a peace of mind thing. If something ever did happen, say someone was threatening my wife, and I was there and couldn't do anything about it I would never forgive myself. |

It took me 120 days to get my CWP. Crossing counties/cities isn't a big deal unless you are in IL or CA (as far as I know). Crossing state lines is a different thing and you have to be aware of the laws. We were talking about going to DC next year to do some Smithsonian stuff. Once I told my wife she would have to leave her gun at home she no longer wanted to go. Her way of voting against their gun ban with her money. Those stories you hear are just stories. I would say that all CWP holders (they were tested on this stuff) know that there are different laws in different places and take steps to become informed about them. |
