Metro frame and body repair.; Rust!

Got 70 MPG?

I will most likely be having metroshultz do the repair work on must jellybean. The frame horns are rusting (no surprise) as well as the side skirts and the rear fender wells are almost gone. I've knocked out the rusty portions in the rear fenders and filled them with expanding home insulation foam as a band-aid fix for now. I was getting drenched while driving in the rain, so that got old really fast. I painted the foam so it wouldn't be such an eye sore, as well as painted the sides of the car with a primer that would adhere to rust, but as you can see, the cancer continues.

Were the forward frame stands welded, or was some other compound use to reinforce? It almost looks like bondo was used on them or something. I would investigate that (use a magnet over the areas for which you're unsure) and get those bad boys welded where they need it. As far as the rear of the car in the hatch compartment, that's a non-weight bearing area until it creeps over to the shock tower...then you may have an issue.

I would recommend hitting the rust with Ospho or some other hardening agent before foaming. I happen to be an advocate for Great Stuff foam in the body of these cars as fillers as long as the rust underneath is first treated.

Nothing has been done to them at all yet I think you may be looking at the tar-like coating on the frame itself that was placed on the car when it was new. It's also a little oily down there as well, so that may make things look a little weird too. That and these pictures were taken off of a cell phone.

Would it not be easier and SAFER, to just find another Geo of the same year(s) that have a blown motor, or trans is messed up, or the interior is just shot to hell, ... and then transfer everything over to the new rolling chassis?

It seems to me that it's more work replacing all the bad metal only to have to do a crap load of body work, to end up with what another chassis could provide you, ... SAFETY!

Just asking .... :hmm

You'll not find a good rust free geo around here. I've put too much work into this car to back away from it.

I just bought a 1997 Geo Metro for $400. All that was wrong with it was that the CV shaft was broken. So I thought it was a good deal and had the Car towed to my home so I could work on it. When the Tow truck raised it up there was a loud sound and we saw that the frame has busted. :smackface

I've been online and seen so many things about getting this welded and fixed, but every car shop around here keep saying they won't do it due to liability. Does anyone know of anyone in the SW ohio area that does do this repair?

Damnit, We need someone like that here in the midwest. I'd fall over dead on the spot if someone actually said they could help me and were in my backyard. And his price actually looks reasonable. Jesus. That's it--I'm moving somewheres else.

todaugen,
For what you were quoted from the one shop, you could rent a truck and trailer and take your Metro to PAFixer. Then turn in the truck and trailer and drive the Metro home.
My Brother did that when his Head gasket blew in Toyota Supra.
Local Shop = $3500
Shop I worked at = $1800
U-Haul = $350
Time of from work 3 days. (fixed over a weekend)

Todaugen check into learning how to weld. At the factory we used 11oVolt welders on The Ford GT-40. (Certain application) You'll discover how you couldn't live without your welder.
