I just recently put a '92 two door metro on the road. It was given to me in the fall of '08 and had been parked in the weeds for many years because it developed an engine noise with 107,775 miles on the clock. I did a compression check and found one cylinder to be low so tore it down to find a broken piston in the number two hole. The skirt was completely missing from one side. At the time I wasn't sure if I was going to keep it or sell it. In either case I was trying to do the job as cheaply as possible so got a used piston from a friend and checked all the rod bearings and some of the rings. Everything looked good and checked out well within the service limits so I cleaned everything up good and put it back together. This is the first time I have ever put used parts back in something but not long before this I did a lot of work to an '87 Honda Civic and it ended up costing a lot more than it was worth so I didn't want to repeat that. Once I got the engine together it wouldn't start. I ended up replacing the fuel pump as it had set so long that it was fully stuck with tar. I finally got it running but didn't have any paper work yet as the previous owners couldn't find it at that time. I also didn't have money for 4 tires, battery and other stuff it needed. I finally got the paper work needed to get it in my name and this week I got the rest of the stuff done and started driving it. This car was filthy so many hours were spent detailing it inside and out and I'm amazed at how well it turned out. It has no rust at all so that's awesome. So far its driving great but does need an alignment as the steering wheel is off center and I don't know how the toe is doing. One problem I have is with the idle air control. Once warmed up and idling normally its all fine until I open the throttle just a little and then let it shut again it won't idle down right away. The IAC will sit there clicking away as it keeps the idle up but will soon start slowly coming back down to normal (probably less than 30 seconds to get back to normal idle). I opened up the IAC and found the little solenoid plunger/rubber stopper part had one broken leg out of three that suspend the center part of the valve. I figured this might be the problem so put a new one on but it does the same thing. It runs fine if I just unplug it or plug the vacuum line. It still has a cold high idle without this and an A/C high idle valve so I'm not really clear when this IAC valve is used. I can't seem to hear it kick in when I put a load on the engine with the lights and blower. Any ideas where to start? I'm not clear what is supposed to trigger this valve so don't know where to start. I cleaned all the grounds I cold find. Mark |

Welcome to the forum, 92GoCart It sounds like you've done a fair amount of work already. Glad to hear it's running down the road. The metro techs will be happy to sort out the IAC issue. Do you have any before/after pictures to post? We like pictures. |

Thanks guys. I just got some pictures uploaded to Picasa that can be seen at the bottom of this album: Geo Pictures I filled up tonight after my first 158 miles and got 57.2 mpg. I can deal with driving a go cart with numbers like that. That was mixed town and hwy driving at speeds below 55 so I know when its all town it won't be that high. This really put a smile on my face as I wasn't expecting it to be that high. I used to drive my Dodge Cummins as a daily driver getting high teens to low 20s. Next I moved to an old '87 Honda Civic getting low to mid 30s and now this just in time for fuel prices to be on the rise for summer. Edited by 92GoCart, Apr 16 2010, 12:50 AM.

Wow, nice pics, nice car too. Keep those running boards cleaned, plus the front fenders just behind the front wheels...that's where the rust starts (not to mention the control arm pillar in front). 57.2 mpg...that's what we're talking about. I practically need a hole in the gas tank to get below 40mpg in the '96 (oh wait...I do, lol). Gotta get that fixed. Edited by gbreadman, Apr 13 2010, 10:38 PM.

Luckily out here in southeast Utah I don't have to worry about rust. This car has probably been in the area all its life and it doesn't have a spot of rust anywhere so I'm really thankful for that (average rainfall is under 10"/year here). You can't see it in the pictures but the left rear quarter right above the wheel has a little rumple and I can feel a slight imperfection in the fender above the left front wheel but they are minor. |
