That pesky distributor O-Ring seal...; How-To soon to come!

Got 70 MPG?

I ordered a remanufactured distributor from O'Reily's last weekend, it came in today.
There's nothing wrong with mine. I just needed to take the O-Ring off of it and compare it to their universal ones they sell.
Found an exact match. O'Reily part number 213 from their O-Ring kit box.
Price - $0.99 I bought 2.

I will be making a How-To on this repair during the weekend as it's very easy to do, yet no one has ever posted it up before. :rocker

Sir, yes sir!

Nice tip. Your guide/how to post might be worthy of a sticky there. Lots of people have this problem and can't remove the distributor and run to the parts store with it to compare o-rings.

A better person than me might see if they can cross-reference that part number and see if there are any other places that sell it, just in case you don't have an O'Reilly Auto Parts nearby.

Fair enough. Here's an Amazon link to the exact O-Ring that everyone will need.

Is that the Dorman Part #64213 (Inside Dia. 15/16" Outside Dia. 1-3/16" Thickness 1/8" Std. # 213)?

There may be some other part numbers here:

Yes it is. It's a very common O-Ring that's easily found. If you cannot get one locally they can be bought off of the internet for really cheap.

i have the same problem and have replaced the o ring, put sealer on it hoping to fix the leak but none of that will work if the leak is from the shaft itself and the fsm says there is no fix for it other than a new distributor. that is the fix i would like to see

Somebody posted a fix for a leaky distributor shaft... I think it even listed the part number. I'll see if I can find it.

cool!! ive been needing this o-ring since i got my car...but really havent wanted to tackle it, hehe, just because of the fear of doing it wrong...but since doing my tune up last year im pretty confident i can do it now... :whistle just got to get some moola, money i mean... :hmm
this is the o-ring that is notorious for having leaks in these little gems, ehh? because when i had it looked at before agreeing to buy it, they said it will need to be replaced soon...well almost 4 yrs. later and havent done that yet :-/

Damn, I can't find the link. Has anybody else seen the post that shows how to drive out the old distributor seal and install the new one?

Perhaps it's all in my head and there really isn't one.

No, you aren't imagining things.
Here's a teaser thread:

including part numbers, but no pictures.

Here's one with pictures

but no part numbers. A typical case of separation anxiety B-) B-) B-)

I think I read someone talking about the dist. leaking from the internal seal not the external seal. This is what I need to learn how to fix as the only fix I have found is a new dist. I don't have a spare so I am not looking forward to tearing it all apart only to find that it's not repairable.

Rock Auto may sell a rebuild kit for the distributor that includes the seals. I know for a fact that they sell a replacement magnetic pickup for it.
