Hi all!

I bought a 5-speed 1992 Geo Metro hatchback about 8 months ago for $600 (talked the guy down from $850!) and I've fallen in love with it since then. It is fire engine red with gray spraypaint where the previous owner tried touching up some damage on the driver-side. :smackface [I will post some pictures of it soon.] Squeels like a banshee when I start 'er up, I'm guessing it's the same alternator belt slippage that everyone seems to have. So far, I've replaced the driver-side headlamp and the battery. I still need to:

-Install a driver-side mirror. Like I said, it was damaged on that side.
-Fix the handle on the driver-side door so that I can open it from the outside.
-Determine if my passenger-side brake light needs a new fuse.
-Eventually replace the windshield, it has a crack spanning vertically on the passenger-side! :(
-Install a kickin' sound system. I hate the radio and speakers I have. I think I have a loose wire somewhere, it usually plays on the right side. Sometimes it goes to stereo when I jolt it shifting or hit a speedbump! :lol

I don't have an owners manual for it and so I have some questions:

-How many quarts of oil does it take?
-Should I use 5w30? Should I go synthetic?
-What is the best brand of oil treatment to use?

yes 5w30 synthetic is preference I would lean toward yes if you want mpg's and a cleaner engine

if the engine is really beat it might not be a great idea to go synthetic definetly not if you have any leaks. (expensive leak :-)

3.5 quarts if its the 1.0 3cyl engine

none. don't use any oil treatments. You don't need it would probably do more harm than good.

There is no left brake light fuse. if there is a fuse its both or none. so if that one side is out and not the other you have a broken connection either in a wire socket or a bulb broken.

handles are available on ebay relatively affordably.

Do all the normal checks. compression etc.. ($10 at harbor freight)

lube everything. get it inspected they will find anything else you might miss.

check all fluids for quality level and contamination.

enjoy reading the forum for lots of good tidbits advice suggestions and procedures etc..

FIND all rust (trust me it has some) and treat it. at the minimum wire brush till all lose stuff is gone and then rustoleum to neutralize and prevent further rust.

Welcome to the forum clowncar_driver! :)

The engine takes 4 quarts if you replace the filter with the larger size, like the Baldwin B2.
The recommended oil is the synthetic 0-30 or 5-30. (many folks use Mobil 1)
And a recommended transmission fluid is the sychromesh Pennzoil or something similar.

There are online wiring diagrams and manual books linked on this website.
A number of members have also chosen to buy Service Manuals from amazon, ebay, or other members who have a copy for sale.

Sounds like you've gotten to work on your car already.
We're looking forward to seeing your pictures when you post them. :popcorn

Yes, Welcome to the forum, clowncar_driver! :coffee

All of the above. ;)
I lived in Dallas for a while, close, Eugene also, met my wife there. Rode my recumbent up and down the coast and valleys. It's a little late notice but are you up for a road trip to Reno and back next Thursday, Friday and Saturday for Geopalooza? 469 miles is closer than my 520. :lol

CCD, lots of people here swear by synthetic. Consider Walmarts high-mileage 5w30. This is a superb oil that works great in my Metro and leaves nothing to be desired. It will save you some money too.

The Willamette Valley huh? Cool.

My cousins wife runs the dance school in Lebanon. She was a acrobat for the Folies. She danced there for like 20 years then retired and opened a dance school. I had not seen them for quite sometime. I walked in. She did not recoginze me. I asked for an Extra large too too. LOL After I spoke, she recognized my voice. LOL I had her going for a minute though. LOL
