I've been corresponding with a man in Springfield, OH about 70 miles from my house who posted a 1991 Geo Metro hatchback for sale for $500. Last week I had a tow hitch installed on my Kia Sedona minivan, so I thought "what the heck!" and rented a tow dolly for $45 at UHaul and made the drive out to his house this morning. The drive out was in a monsoon of rain.....really crappy start to the day. When I pulled up I immediately recognized it wasn't a 1991, but a 1992 XFI!!! He accepted my offer of $300 and away I went! This is the 3rd XFI I've been privileged to rehab, and 2nd 92 XFI back to back. The body damage to this one, although challenging, is not as severe as my previous project. The driver's side frame stand needs some welding attention, but it's not bad. The rocker panels are shot, but I've got a fix for that. The interior is filthy, but that's why they make elbow grease. He also gave me some extra parts when he replaced the engine. One of the parts was a camshaft. I'm uncertain if he replaced the XFI cam with a non-XFI cam or what, but I'll figure that one out later. Enjoy the pics! ![]() ![]() This is how I'm rolling now with the family minivan....haha! ![]() Filthy interior, but I've dealt with this before. ![]() So I've got some dents to bang out, some rockers to repair, a little welding support to the driver's side frame stand, a driver's side window that won't roll all the way up (big shock there, huh?), a driver's side door handle that's broken, and NO RADIO! The biggest problem seems to be electrical, as the battery will die out. Must be a ground issue or stray wire draining juice somewhere. I'll look for it later. How did the missus react to this one? Or has she finally reconciled herself to you fixing and not keeping ? The answers to these and many other questions anxiously awaited for tomorrow on 'As the Metro gets restored....' |

When it came to adding the towhitch to the family van, I convinced the Missus that it could be used to tow storage on long vacations and other necessities. She was fine with that. Regarding this 92XFI she has learned that this is a hobby in which I get my money back.....sometimes with a small profit attached to it. So as long as I throw her a few bucks every once in awhile she doesn't mind. In terms of my current project, the 92XFI, I really don't know what it's going to take to make it road worthy again. My best guess is to weld support to the frame stand, shore up the floorboards and rockers, bang out some dents, and paint. Mechanically it runs really well. |

Probably because all of the rust-free Metros are in SC, so therefore, nobody wants to part with them. Apparently up in Ohio rocker panels are optional!! |

Metros are a great gift to anyone smart enough to appreciate them. ....That makes this website a gathering place for geniuses.
