Yesterday at lunch my back right tire went flat. I ran over a nail or something and happened to be near a Sears Automotive, where I've purchased tires for other cars in the past. They were kind enough to put on the spare for me (I forgot to pack my jack...Murphy's Law!). Anyway, I have road hazard protection with Mr. Tire about 40 miles away, so I took the tire there to get it plugged. Tonight I went to remove the spare, and wouldn't you know it....Sears stripped the lugs getting them onto the posts! I was able to turn them counterclockwise maybe 2 1/2 turns before I realized they weren't coming off. Unfortunately, when I went to tighten them back on, two of the posts broke off completely!! So Snowball is grounded for awhile until I can get the posts replaced. But herein lies my dilemma....the Sears location is at fault, but they were doing it as a courtesy. Since they're about 40 miles from my house, I should probably just suck it up, buy a few new posts and lugs, and DIY, right? Should I call Sears and gripe?? I'm fortunate that I have a spare ride, but daggone it, I wanted to drive Snowball, and this is such a major inconvenience!! 90metro |

if its rear studs no worries they are disgustingly easy to swap out. If they are front lugs. Well those are a royal pita :-) |

The only rolls I own are the ones around my midsection unfortunately!! Hey, I'll be in your state in a few weeks....Nashville to be precise. I know that's a few hundred miles away from Memphis, but it's closer than I normally am. Nashville is about 6 hours from my home and I'm taking the Geo (assuming aforementioned lugposts are replaced). |

They love to use the air impacts, once they got my wheels so tight,I had to jump up and down on the lug wrench to get them loose. So now, if I get someone to change my tires, i tell them to only use a lug wrench .

I think I know of the Sears you speak of. Last time I was there I think it was a Beavis or was it a Butthead that helped me out? It had to have been one of those guys that did your tire (I confess I'm a fan of the boys). Just figure about 25% of the people you encounter are idiots (and should not reproduce), guard aginst them, and you should be all right. Call the store manager. I would want to know if it were my store (or department). You might as well fix the car yourself though. I think you can get the bolts from the Zone ect. |

Nashville is a great city. My job sent me there for a couple of weeks a few years ago so I had some time to look around. It was clean and friendly with lots of fine establishments. After this big flood, they are going to be cleaning up for quite awhile. The cumberland river which runs thru the city made quite a mess. Lots of people lost everything from what I am hearing. |

America's Tire (known as Discount Tire nationally) discontinued the use of just impact wrenches on tire installation. They use a toque stick that has really low give then tighten the rest with a torque wrench. Of course they can't use the stick on the Geo as the factory torque is less then it. They also print out the factory inflation pressures and torque values on the work order that goes with the car into the service bay. (used to work for them) |

I have run into the same situation myself. If They were doing the job for free, You are responsible for the studs. If they charged you, They are responsible for them. In the future (and this is what I do) Write on the work order; "Lug Nut Torque is 45 ftlbs. These are 10mm studs, any more torque and they will break!" I have to allow others to remove my wheels when I get inspected or if I am at a tire store getting new shoes. One bad tire shop can ruin your whole day. And they are fairly easy to replace, the front ones take longer. |

Gee, that seems like a very pragmatic approach to the notion that a large percentage of people are incompetent and should not reproduce. Kind of the “work with it approach”….. Very good! Rampant foolishness has ingrained the crank case attitude in me (maybe I like it?) , but I can see that your approach fits in nicely with the “many people are idiots” notion that strangely seems so dear; it’s just a preemptive approach.

Okay, I went to Auto Zone and got 4 stems and lugs that are 10mm and paid $14.80 total. Got home, jacked up the car, and replaced everything in about 10 minutes, no problem. However, I did call the Sears Automotive location to let them know what happened. The manager (or whomever answered the phone) said it was impossible...that it couldn't have been them, because they use torque wrenches. I said "No, I was there, and they used an air impact gun." I told him I didn't want anything or any money, and was just giving them an FYI for future reference.....let's call it a coaching opportunity for his techs. He said "Uh huh" and hung up the phone!! Okay, so I wasn't pissed off or anything, but something they failed to recognize....I've purchased 2 sets of tires from them over the past 2 years, and have had alignments and other miscellaneous things done there. They had an opportunity to say "You know what Mr. Sells, I'll tell my guys right now to be careful in the future, especially with the smaller 10mm posts. Thanks for your input and sorry for the inconvenience." If he would have said something like that, I would have continued to be a customer. But his cavalier care-less-that's-your-problem attitude cost him a customer. They had their chance....that's how 90metro rolls!! |

yeah, i seen more people get there butts kissed at work over stuff that may or may not have been the tech's fault. definitely not how i or the service manager at our dealership would have handled it. and personally i've quit patronizing buisnesses that have treated me like that in the past also. the first time i put my wheels back on at work i used the impact, until i found out that spec is 44 ft lbs. then hand wrench or torque wrench only for me and mine. |

Let upper management know what happened and your previous spending habits at their store. Then tell them you'll never shop there again. Try to get that managers name so they know who to have a talking to. /former manager Edited by CityConnection, May 7 2010, 08:48 PM.
