at least you dont have one of the duties at my shop of pulling frames... yea it sounds fun but when that clamp flys outta their like a bat out of hell and whizzes @ you at mach 90 you'll either be in the hospital, in the morgue, or in the bathroom calling your significant other to bring you a new pair of underwear because it somehow missed you. note to self stand at an obtuse angle to where the pull tower is located while the vehicle is being pulled. have you ever seen a chunk of 1/4" plate go thru a computer monitor? i have... its amazing what 20 tons of force will do when its unleashed. lol |

Then you will miss the satisfaction of disassembling and repairing a complex device such as a engine etc. Then putting it all back together and having it run better than new. For some of us it is the thrill of not being dependent on others for our transportation needs. It is quite a feeling to work for along time on a engine and put many dollars into it. Then there are no excuses, time to crank it, did you do it right? Did you do all of the hundreds of little things that could trip you up? . Hit the key, Boom, It is alive, It RUNS, Yes, yes, Touchdown, Hole in One, Home run all rolled into one. Then you can open your hood and Boast " I rebuilt this engine". Try it. It can be very rewarding.

(have you ever seen a chunk of 1/4" plate go thru a computer monitor?) No, cant say I have but I have seen a clawhammer thrown by my mad wife from the outside all the way thru my 20 by 24 garage I freshly built and the hammer go right thru my newly installed window in the back. She meant buisness! |

actually a metro spring won't kill you or likely harm you (ask me how I know) but YES good sound advice there is a shocking amount of energy in those things :-) they are cheap and VERY effective at harbour freight. make sure to use a power drill or your arm will regret it when your done :-) Edited by nerys, Jan 26 2011, 10:51 AM.

how about... I don't do this all the time, but where protective glasses/goggles when working under a car. (or when grinding...etc) There are so many times you get dirt in your eyes, then you spend 10 mins trying to get the dirt out. Also when jump starting a car, hook the jumper cables to the dead battery first, then the good battery. Also if you are ever messing with sulfuric acid/ battery acid, keep baking soda around. .......speaking of battery acid. A few years ago when I was at drill, I had to fill batteries with battery acid. The batteries were for scrapers (i think) and you had to pour each cell. Anyways I put on glasses, gloves, and protective clothing. It was a hot day and while wearing that I started sweating my ass off. My sgt thought it was battery acid on my face and about flipped out. lol. I kind of went with it for a while just to see him go crazy. |

I hear ya on the safety glasses! I got a piece of metal stuck in my eye when doing rust repairs on a 1966 VW Beetle. It got infected and had to be removed by a doctor. Some antibiotics took care of the infection and I was back to cutting and grinding metal within a few days. Don't let all this scare you though. Just remember that the ultimate end of your life is death. Life is just what you do to pass the time until you die. The bigger question though is what comes afterward and how does what you do in this life affect it. Edited by Jim-Bob, Jan 26 2011, 01:38 PM.

Heh, I sent a pulley through a fence and into a house when the plate steel bed it was mounted to failed. I saw it happen and all I can say is that you would need high-speed cameras to actually see it fly. Once second it was there...BANG...then it was gone. Hell, the wood from the fence didn't even land for a few seconds. Amazing what damage you can do with a tow truck! |

Yeah having a long pony tail around a creeper can really be a drag. When you stand up and the creeper comes with you. lol Our friend Billy mentioned First Aid classes. A great idea. I got to use mine Monday. I was junk yarding up in Cresent City. I came out of the yard and my brother is on the ground holding a guys head up just off the ground. And an idiot is running around panicing. It seems one of the locals had fallen over the hillside, face down, in a huge pile of horse Mike found him. He asked the guy if he was okay. His anwser was he's talking to Spike. No your face down in a pile of Mike pulled him up the steep hill. When I got there, we got him in a safe position. I could tell my brother was very far away at that moment. He was back in a rice paddy Waiting on a helicoter that arrived 40+years ago. So I started with the basic's. Hey brother, Whats you name? Do you know where you are? NO. Do you know what you were doing? NO. His eyes were pinned and he was very clammy. Turns out, he is a diabetic, and was really drunk. His face was bleeding, but not to bad. So we had to be careful to not get his blood on us. About that time the amublance showed up. And I was able to pass along the info. Not one other person there knew what to do. I had to stop them from wiping the blood off his face. Blood borne pathigens are bad news. My brother was sick the rest of the day. It brought back really bad stuff for him.Because of training and practice. We knew what to do. The guy is a real old man. And had fallen down a hill at about a 45degree angle. The only thing that was hurt was his pride. Edited by Murf 59, Jan 27 2011, 02:28 AM.
