My name is Sam, and I just turned 16. For my birthday, I got a 1996 Geo Metro sedan (base model). It’s a project car, so in terms of fixing it, the deal is that my step-dad, who’s a mechanic, provides instructions, but I have to do the work and pay for the parts myself. I bought a Chilton manual from the NAPA where I live, so I have that to help. I'm hoping this forum will help tell me any information not covered by my step-dad/manual.

:hb samsonite!

"step dad-manual" that's a good one, eBay? :lol What is your budget? That will kind of set your priorities.
Wires would be good. $49 shipped - 8mm plug wires.

Chilton is OK, don't believe the firing order if you replace the cap and rotor.

Posted Image is correct.

Could cut a muffler off a car at a junk yard and install it.

NAPA screwed up. I ordered a Hanes for my car, and they gave me a Chilton’s for an 85-93 metro. I only took it because they said it was the only one available and it was cheaper than buying online. Because of this, I can't identify the engine/tranny using the VIN number since the chart in the Chilton doesn’t cover my year. It is an automatic though. In terms of budget, I have a job that pays a little over $100 a week. I got this job specifically to pay for fixing the car and for insurance once it's on the road

My windshield is cracked in two places, so I need a new one in order for the car to pass inspection. Can anyone give me an estimated price for a windshield, both for just the glass and for shop installation?

Windshield replacement can run anywhere from $175.00 to $300.00 depending on the company. I would call around.

a metro windscreen is not tooo hard to repalce. $15 gets you a kit to do it yourself if you have a Harbor Frieght nearby Kiss your paychecks goodbuy that place is addictive :-)

get some window glue and that kit and head to a P&P $30 usually will get you a windshield.

My VAN I would not want to try myself. My metro I would try it myself in a heartbeat.

When I get a new car I have an "automatic" list of things I simply replace whether it needs it or not. gives me a good baseline.

Plugs ($3 a pop) Rotor and Cap if your car has them ($11 or so) Wires ($22) Air Filter unless its squeaky white CHECK THE P&P METROS I got 3 brand spanking new filters $1 a pop :-)

Oil and Filter ($12) PCV ($4) Oil Quick Change replacement Bolt kit from HF ($4)

Some things you should get and use if you don't have them already.

Compression Test ($10 at HF on the cheap or $21 for the same thing but in a nice case with a couple adapters)

Decent little $10 ratchet set (walmart has a nice stanley one for $9) toss it under your drivers seat. That right there will do 90% of the small bolts on the car)

Torque Wrench $20 at HF.

SHOP MANUAL from Ebay. $20 to $40 this is the actual Dealer mechanic shop manuals. Not the chilton/haynes junk :-) though I have them too :-)

Since yours is a 96 Got a laptop? get a cheap $30-$40 ODBII usb interface from ebay.

STOP whatever your doing and go get THIS now
