Hey guys,

97 Metro Lsi 1.3L Automatic

I noticed my idle is creeping up in reverse and drive gears. In park and neutral, its about 900 or so and when I put it in gear, ... with the brake on, ... it's about 1200 - 1300. Other than that, ... it's driving fine, mostly freeway driving seeing 75 mph 50% of the time.

ALSO, ... I know I have a trans problem, ... and I have one being rebuilt. The current one, the pump is making noise on now. I drive it around 200 miles daily. Even with the trans going, ... it has not given me any problems other than it's normal growling.

Any clues?????

I'm pretty sure its designed to idle higher in gear or when moving, mine does anyway.

But should it be pulling the car? I don't think so, but I could be wrong.

My 99 auto sedan pulls the car if I take my foot off the gas. Its the auto tranny, its what it does. I'm pretty sure it would stall if it didn't due to the drag from the torque converter.

i've been waiting for you to comment on your motor what mileage are you getting ? normal for it to increase idle in gear mine does the same or did its back on the operating table for what i think is a failed wrist pin/piston
. also i had to replace the torque converter as it was making noise but you'll likely do that with your new tranny

I know it supposed to pull some, ... but it's pulling more. I find myself having to apply more pressure on the brake peddle than before, almost as if it were a hand shaker (stick shift) and the clutch was starting to grab. The motor is a 1.3L and my mileage seems to have dropped slightly.

:hmm Maybe I'm not explaining it so well.

Have you looked at vacuum leaks, the usual suspect in high idle, which you have now. Progressive rising is interesting.

My 1996 manual, book 2, suggests that if the transmission is slipping it could be fluid level, TV Cable (maladjusted, binding, damaged), Shift select cable. Valve Body, accumulators, forward clutch, one-way clutch and fluid pressure are also mentioned, there is a vent (blocked?) and it appears to be on top near the TV Cable.

If it's engine, then something is slowly getting worse. :dunno

So you are putting in a new trans which will eliminate that issue. something i would look at is the vacuum brake booster block it off(the vacuum line) and then apply the brake

Thanks guys,

Yes The new trans is being rebuilt so I can drive the car until the swap. I checked all the lines with ether (starting fluid). No jump. I knew the trans has been wanting to go now for about 5000 miles or so.

Today, ... on my way to work, ... the idle was just fine, ... no issues.

Puzzling to say the least! :hmm

well i had the same problem with the idle on my 92 metro hatch and it turned out to be a vacuum hose that was broken on the throttle body. if problem persists you should go through all vacuum hoses and check if they are dry-rotted or clogged.

My fast idle (3 cyl., 5 spd.) was up to 2K.
The cause was a PCV valve blown open in both directions.
Solved the problem immediately.
