Mmm. . . Wheel bearings for convertibles! My 1990 convertible manual indicates that there is an inside bearing and inner seal--and an outside bearing and outer seal lip. I've been following beraring threads closely because I have a right front bearing on the way out--93 convertible. Some mention was made that the convertibles have only one bearing. I have a 94 manual and the 90 convertible manual as well. Both pretty much say the same thing--as does the Haynes. I'm guessing if mention is made of one large bearing you are more on target about this than the manuals which seem to just copy and paste various elements across years. One cartridge bearing for convertibles? (This would be like the 95 geos, correct?? No more bearing questions. Promise! |

I would imagine the best way to find out is to remove the steering knuckle and look at the old bearing. If a cylindrical bearing on either side of a ridge in the steering knuckle, you have older style double bearings. If you have tapered bearings loose and held together by the race, you have newer style one piece. Even though my manual says I have two bearings (like in the figure below), it's really the newer one piece assembly. The manual just shows every piece of the bearing exploded. It should be easy to identify once you get the steering knuckle off. ![]() ...or, just pull the entire wheel hub from the knuckle and peek inside. Probably not the proper order for taking things apart but it's the quickest way to tell. I plan on posting a how-to but the damn outer race is a bitch to get off if you don't have the proper tools such as the one pictured here: ![]() Of course, I'm not a pro but it was a lot easier for me to see once I got it disassembled. Exploded diagrams are never as exploded actual parts.

Dude! That's it. All these damn manuals. I try to take them seriously--look at them. But I always just do stuff eventually. Thanks for that! -M |
