I just bought a 94 four door with the 5-speed transmission. it runs okay after i pushed the wires all the way on the spark plugs(lol). shakes quite a bit still. Is that normal? Rust isnt bad except for the doors. on both front doors, the bottoms of the door is quite rusty. and one of the back doors on the outer skin there is a big rust hole near the window.

The good-
-almost no rust on unibody.
-ac works.
-mechanics in good shape.

cost of car-$440
title transfer-$110.59
tag fee-$8
radiator-$135
two tires from ebay-$98.38

so ive got almost 800 in it plus whatever it cost to mount the tires.

thought? comments? any things to look for?

Welcome, and congrats on the find! A 5 speed 4 door is kinda rare. Looks like you found a good deal too. We have an online buyers guide that we normally recommend you read BEFORE purchasing a Metro, but it will help you nonetheless. Please post pictures if you're able. Most of us use imageshack.us or some other method.

Ill try to post some pictures at some point. I know the struts are shot on this car, and i was thinking about installing lowering springs while im in there. do you think thats a good idea from a gas mileage perspective. what about those cheapy ebay intakes? I vacuumed it today:) it needs a bath.

Welcome to the site, give the front frame horns a good looking over (the area where the a-arms are) and make sure they are intact. Otherwise, sounds like a great deal :thumb btw, we love pics :)

Lowering springs are going to cost $220 or so, many people just hacksaw the stock ones. Neither one is going to affect mileage very much, might give a slight advantage but I doubt it could be measured. Come to think of it, don't hacksaw them, get a cutoff wheel for your power drill. Took me a full day and three hacksaw blades to do mine.

The four cylinder breathes just fine through the exact same intake, that's not going to make much difference either. Cold air is better for power, warm air (underhood) is better for mileage.

Pull the plug wires off one at a time while it's running to see if one of the cylinders isn't contributing its fair share, wear a heavy glove to do this, you can get zapped. Best bet is to get a compression test, might have a burned valve, very common problem.

Welcome

Yes i plan on compression checking it. it also has a bit of a vibration at 40-45. i just put two new tires on the front and balanced the rears, so thats probably not it. maybe suspension. if it is a valve the 3tech(i think) economy package is intriguing. it needs a pcv valve, and i was gonna check on the egr system. I know it needs struts. i wonder how much new ones are

Welcome to the forum, Bone_Head311! :coffee

You've been doing your homework. :thumb I went with KYB struts and it would not matter if it's eBay $150 shipped, or an on-line dealer (looking at $40-53 each). They are quality struts, got the manual spring compressors from Harbor Freight. I'm toying with lowering springs but not sure if I want my catalytic converter/header any lower. Other members have reported great handling improvements. I suppose a little positive camber would be good.

You might check for 0o toe in. Vibration could be the rack and pinion or as you suspect; struts. Depends on the vibration. :dunno

well this morning before work, i go to see if i can pull back the timing cover to check the condition of the belt when i notice the water pump leaking. i think ill have to check compresssion when i get home. if its low would you guys do a top end rebuild or a whole overhaul. has 123k on it. If compression is good ill just throw a water pump and timing belt at her. on a side note, i got bit up by mosquitos out there. argggggh!

Well, here's your How To: Compression Test thread, and the wet test would determine if the rings are bad. :ermm:

I did a compression check on the triple fury machine, and all 3 were roughly 120. than i did the wet test and it came out the same. so head time? yeah?

It will run with low numbers like that, but not very well. At least they are even across the board. I would figure in a rebuild. Start collecting parts and when you get a 3 day weekend, go for it!
