Hey guys im back , this time its to cry. I drove my geo to ft collins today and the engine seized on me. I have a broken oil sensor ( whatever tells you you need damn oil its just a light) lol and i could never tell when i needed to fill oil up. It needed new piston rings, it ate oil up way too quick. So it seized and now i want to know how easy or hard it might be to fix it ???????? |

Sorry to hear about the trouble. To start with, how did you determine it is siezed? What exactly is the symptom? |

I would try turning the crank with a wrench with the plugs removed (will move the easiest this was) just to be sure. If the motor will not turn, the block has probably been damaged. You can probably buy a block here for a reasonable price. In Austin Texas you can buy a whole engine for $300 with a 90 warrenty form a junk yard. If you can afford it, put a used engine in, or better yet a rebuild. Low millage, near new engines are also available. An engine only weighs about 100 lbs, so rigging up a hoist does not take a real elaborate effort. You could disassemble the present engine to determine if the damage to the block is fatal - it probably is - but many parts will still be good. The extra parts will make it easier to get a junk yard engine running to good condition. I've never delt with a blown Metro engine, but I'm sure others will chime in with good information. Keep us posted. Edited by crankcase, May 30 2010, 08:19 PM.

I'd find a replacement engine, its not too hard to change out, maybe in a weekend with another person and a hoist. Faster if you convince one of the forum members to help out

I would check that timing belt, just for the sake of it. Any chance it was overheating and seized from being too hot instead of out of oil?

Pull the engine, dump a bunch of oil in the cylinders with the plugs out, rock the engine back and forth until the bottom end frees up. Then rebuild it! |

Man, don't sweat it! It ain't the end of the world, or the end of your car! It IS the end of at least one weekend and a couple hundred dollars. But on the bright side, you said it needed to be re-ringed anyway, so really no big loss. Just take a lot of pictures for us! |

Just because there was oil on the ground doesn't mean the block is cracked. Do some investigating. I've personally had an engine run out of oil and seize on me, that I got freed up on the road and drove it 60 miles home. It ran out of oil because the filter somehow had gotten slightly bent, and the o-ring failed, drained out almost all the oil. I've also made the mistake of not tightening down the oil drain plug and running an engine dry once before. |

hey think of it this way......you get a different block or get yours cleaned up to where its nice again. rebuild the thing. maybe even have headwork done to it while your at it, maybe get a 3tech cam. do it right and you will have a motor that will last you just as long as a brand new one. You will have no worries and the car will run great! These cars are too damn cheap to not keep on the road, even when they blow up. |
