Hello, I am new to this website and I own a 91 geo metro convertible.
Today I did a compression test and spark plug check, afterwords I also took off the air cleaner and sprayed the carb with carb cleaner , now the car wont start I tried spraying starter fluid and it only hesitates and shakes, I think the engine is just flooded I was gonna check the plugs again tomorrow and see what they look like again. any other ideas?
thank you,
marko

Sounds like its flooded, wait overnight and it ought to fire right up. also, you can speed the drying by leaving the plugs out so the cylinders can breathe. Make sure you didn't disconnect any of the sparkplug wires or coil wire at the distributor or coil just to be sure.

My 1.0L floods easily if it's been sitting around for weeks (only when we go on vacation).

You can either:
- pull the fuel pump fuse or relay and crank the engine for a while with throttle wide open (like 20-30 seconds).
- disconnect the injector and do the same as above
- keep cranking it with the throttle floored - EVENTUALLY it'll fire up.

The first 2 methods work the quickest.

Hold it to the floor and crank it.

Is there any chance the plug wires may have been hooked back up in the wrong order?

Correct way to crank a flooded engine but Johnny you should have told him to let up when it starts! :D

does the 1991 have a carb ? or TBi ?
if you disconnect the injector crank the engine , if it was flooded the engine will start after cranking a bit ....
at WOT
as JBD says ,
and it may have "clear flood" which shuts off fuel when throttle is held at WOT and starter is cranked .

but
if it was flooded that badly that the rings were "washed" out , you will need to change the oil as well as the carb cleaner that "washed" out the rings is now in the engine oil

Active we are PROACTIVE!

1 [1pro-] : relating to, caused by, or being interference between previous learning and the recall or performance of later learning <proactive inhibition of memory>
2 [2pro- + reactive] : acting in anticipation of future problems, needs, or changes

It means something that cuts oil which in this case was carburator cleaner, washed by the rings into the crankcase into the oil, there by diluting the oil. I wouldnt worry about it unless you sprayed tons of the stuff. Holding the pedal down to the floor allows the engine to get more air and therefore aids in clearing a flooded condition.

A 91' has throttle body injection - it just looks like a carb.

MWebb is referring to the gas and cleaner may have gone past the rings and is now in your oil.

Where are you located?
I'm in So Cal and have been running 10w30 conventional oil since I bought my Metro used in 98' with 108K miles on the odometer.
I'm at 367,600 miles now!

I'm a fan of 5w30 or 0w30 in cold weather mobil 1, use a quality synthetic always :) and get a good filter I think wix brand is recommended here :)

Welcome to the forum, MarkoRajacic! :coffee

There are varying opinions on oil and filter brands. This can of worms has been opened before as enginedoctorgeo suggests. :whistle If you have a preference go with it. Synthetic is a good direction to go IMHO, unless you have an oil leak. My engine likes it.

Carb cleaner is good, and you might look at Seafoam Maintenance and at least the Throttle Body (TB) cleaning. I have a '91 and was pleased to find out it was injected and such a small, inexpensive car to. There is a black piece of plastic with a dome on top, in the TB and that is the injector. ;)
