My stalling, chugging and hesitation thread has been closed because of the nastiness that went on but I wanted to come back and tell all you GENIUSES what the problem was. It was the distributor cap and rotor. My new mechanic changed them out and the car is now fixed. I did have new plugs and wires put in last summer but neglected the distributor cap and rotor. After him having the car for 9 weeks and only experiencing the trouble twice he looked at it and saw it was corroded inside so he replaced it. I've had the car back now for 3 days, driven it twice and haven't had the problem reoccur. He aslo found the water pump was leaking and replaced that and while doing that found a wire that went to the alternator wasn't in good shape so he replaced that too. I haven't taken the car out yet for a longer drive but my friend did drive it back her for me, about 15 miles, and the problem didn't reappear. I am going for a longer trip today around town and HOPE there are no problems. But so far so good. The car seems to be running better and smoother and more power. He also replaced smoking calipers in the front brakes which I didn't realize was happening. I am hoping this is the end of this 8 month freakin nightmare. I am still going to sell the car in the near future though, within the next few months, and get a newer car, so if anyone is interested in a 96 Geo, as much as I don't want to I need a newer car. I am just not a mechanic. There is another problem I should let you know about. The car was hit in the front end and there is some kind of leak around the windshield, not cracked, or around it so when it rains there is water INSIDE the car on the floor. Consequently there is some rust under the doors. I'm sure the right person could figure out where the leak is and fix the rusted out spots. I just don't know how. |

I had the same problem. All I did was take a bit of sandpaper to the electrodes in the cap and on the rotor. Works great and cost me nothing. |

Sorry you encountered problems with your car. All of us do at one time or another, especially in the Geo Metro Forum. It's unfortunate you didnt find the value from the Forum as others have. None of us is a genius, although collectively I'd like to think we come pretty close. These cars are simple to work on, although occasional problems can be difficult to troubleshoot; hence the need for this forum. I would encourage you to keep the car as an economical option during periods of high fuel prices. After all, it is paid for and you have seemed to isolate the problem. If you decide otherwise, thanks for visiting. |

I have owned 2 cars at once a few times. It was an overlap from the time I had bought a new one and hadn't sold the old one. Since it is paid for maybe I could keep it as a spare. I looked up the Kelly Blue Book value and it's almost in the minus. A used Vespa might cost about the same. But I'd like to find something no older than 5 years, a two seater or at least a tiny car. I love the Mini Cooper but I don't think I could afford one. What I really tried to find a few times was a Suzuki X90 but they are rare. Plus the fact they stopped making them the same year as they stopped making the Geo Metro, 1998. There is another tiny car I have seen around, I don't know the name of it but it's a 2 seater with what looks like a chopped off back. Just straight and flat in the back. Reminds me what it would look like if they made shoes for cows.

If you have the physical space Keep the car. Winterize it or whatever to prepare it for long term storage. remove the battery put it on a tender etc.. etc.. When gas prices go high you won't regret having it AND IF YOU ARE better off when gas prices go higher and therefore still don't need the car You could then sell it for a price that no blue book will reflect :-) (IE a lot of money) When gas prices hit $5 a gallon even rust bucket metro's will fetch a couple thousand if they run :-) |

Its too bad her mechanic was so full of himself to not accept good advice from people who know these cars well. also, a good mechanic should have proper testing equipment and the knowledge of its use and interpretation of its output. mwebb is probably the best resource this site has on the electrical waveforms and such these cars put out. As he says "test do not guess" its good advice that can prevent hundreds-thousands of dollars in unnecessary parts change out when it was a $8 bad dist cap Personally I'd take that information to my first mechanic (or two I don't remember how many people she took it to) and ask for my money back, that should have been one of the first things replaced in his attempts to "replace and see if it works" routine, then call the local BBB if he refuses. That is a very bad practice on his part, and he should be punished for it, either by a refund, or a very bad review to the BBB.

eve/vee2...you need to stop w/ the drama..we dont want it or need it here...go spend yr millions on a different car and leave us alone...say get a toyota or ford ...because seems like you arent reading what our members HAVE been telling you what to do, etc...if you do sell yr car it better be for dirt cheap, since yr so called mechanics havent a clue whats wrong w/ it...maybe sell it for $200.00 to someone on the forum, heehee...im sure one of our experts on here can get it and resell it after it gets fixed properly, for some good money ...have you even thought of maybe the previous owner was rough w/ the car since these lil cars werent thought of as money savers when new?!?!why you think they are scarce or in the junkyards, hmmmm... ughh enough of my rant, sorry guys...
