Hey all. So I was informed that I need new wheel cylinders.... that's understandable. However, because the right backing plate is from a junkyard, they cannot find a wheel cylinder that fits it. They want me to purchase from them a used wheel cylinder for $50, and pay for installation $60. Thats over $100 just so they can charge me another $283 for the wheel clyinders! So i need to find a right rear backing plate, so I can order two rear wheel clinders; and find a cheaper shop to install them. The hard part of that though, is finding the backing plate which autozone or advance auto parts does not carry; and is discontinued by chevy. Any advice? My desired end state in all this is just new wheel cylinders. Thanks all (and sorry for my little rant)! |

Why not rebuild what you already and save yourself some grief? |

Good point. Most wheel cylinders are rebuildable. Do you have any pics of these cylinders and the backing plates? I'm curious if there are major differences between them. This is kind of a new one on me. I know different generations had different brakes... but lots of parts were interchangeable. A puzzler. |

It sounds kind of fishy what the shop is telling you if I understand correctly. A wheel cylinder for the brakes on a 97 Metro should not be hard to find - check with the Zone - and they should not be too expensive (I would imagine less than $20 per). Is your junkyard, right backing plate on the car and working with your leaky wheel cylinders now? That should be a standard part, as far as I know, from the junkyard or new. As bennie442 said, consider doing it yourself. It should take less than an afternoon, just use everyday tools, and is not too hard. All the junk on the rear drum brakes looks kind of confusing at first, but you just do one side at a time so you can refer to the other side if you get lost. Also, there are many pictures around if all else fails. The only thing I can think of is that some how you may have the backing plate for 12" tires, or possibly some non Metro backing plate. Again just see if it matches the other side, especilly size wise. I don't understand why the shop would have trouble getting new or rebuilt wheel cylinders?????? |

The right backing plate is different than the original (on the left). I found the correct cylinder for the left side for less than $10!, i'd rather shell that out than rebuild an old one. What I think i'll do is, get to the wheel cylinder thats on the right, and hope theres a part number on it, and just reorder that. I'll certainly keep everyone updated, and thank you so much for all the advice! |
