Front wheel bearing end play; Wheel bearing end play

Would like your opinions, I'm getting ready for a 500 mile trip and was checking the usual stuff to make sure car is road worthy. Pulled the top of each 12" wheel and found no play until I got to the front passenger's side. Passengers side barely rocks back and forth I'm guessing 1/16 of an inch. Do not hear any noise coming from wheel when driving, is it time to pull off spindle and replace bearings? Your thoughts please and thanks. BTW car is 92 2dr metro.

Hi tribrid-

Welcome to the forum, lots of information here, take some time to look around.

If this were my situation, I would change that wheel bearing and the one one the other side soon. That play may last forever, or for a few thousand miles before becoming auditory and then fail catastrophically, or it may last 200 miles. My general luck leans toward the 200 figure. Another factor will be how you load the vehicle, is this just you and a briefcase or is this three adults with a weeks worth of support gear? These vehicles are pretty hardy.

Hi tribrid-

This thread might be of future assistance, features the next generation Metro, however, still pertinent:

How Do I Replace Front Wheel Bearings

Check the tightness of that big nut in the middle (not the nut holding the steering wheel :) )

If that nut isn't tight, you'll sense play.

If it goes on for too long you can risk damaging the hub that is pressed into the bearing.

Welcome to the forum, tribrid! :coffee

Good point, JellyBeanDriver, maybe all the nuts/bolts should be checked, even the strut bolts and wheel nuts with a torque wrench. The big nut takes a 30 mm socket and 129 foot pounds of torque, lug nuts to 44 ft. lbs. and Chilton says 59 ft. lbs for the lower strut nut/bolts and 20 ft. lbs. for the upper 3 nuts in the tower.
