Recently I purchased this 92 metro convertable 3cyl. with a blown motor I replaced it with a 3cyl. from my local junk yard. It started but had a bad knocking sound so we stripped the engine and replace a few bad lifters and replace all the gaskets now it won't start it has gas, compression, and spark. but no start. the spark on the #1 spark plug wire is weak. does anybody know what might be wrong with it? I have tried swapping the distributors and plug wires but same problem. PLEASE HELP. |

If you have spark, fuel and compression the only reason left for a no start scenario is timing. Could you elaborate on the weak spark on #1? How are you checking spark? Are you sure those lifters are opening up? Did you immerse them in oil before you installed them? Edited by Spock, Jun 11 2010, 05:05 PM.

I did oil the lifters, I replaced the timing belt and according to some papers i printed out at autozone saying the timing marks should be at the very top. to check the spark i removed the plugs and touched them to the cowel and cranked it to check the spark. |

Take a look at Timing Belt Replacement and see if they are the same as AZ. If you rotated the engine twice the marks would realign or there was a mistake. |

If you changed the dist. and the wires and still have a weak spark on #1 then you have a bad spark plug. I still think your timing is off. Try some shadetree mechanic diagnosis. Put your finger over the number one sparkplug hole and try to rotate the engine until you can just feel it start to suck (this is after the compression) TDC is what you are looking for. Then look at the rotor and see if it is pointing to the #1 nipple on the dist. cap. Make sure you have the firing order correct too. Those are the obvious basics that come to mind. If you have replaced the head, I'll bet you have enough mechanical wherewithal to have already checked the basics. I do too, but I can also tell you about a time I tore the carburetor apart on my motorcycle 4 times before I replaced the bad spark plug that was causing my whole problem. Does it pop and sputter and 'want' to start? Or just nothing but cranking? |

To replace your hydraulic lifters you would have had to reset your timing. Make sure that the camshaft gear isn't 180 degrees off. This will keep the motor from starting. |
