Engine is out of the car, cannot seem to loosen the crank pulley bolt... Any ideas? How does everyone keep the crank from moving? I wish I had an impact wrench. :(

Remove oil pan and wedge a piece of wood between block and crank.

Yeah that :) I usually get that loose before I remove the engine :) If its stuck and the car is still put together you can bump the starter and break it loose (be very careful when doing this)

An impact wrench will get it off, too. I've done that several times. Remove the engine, and forget to remove that pulley. Usually an impact will remove it without having to wedge the engine or anything. Give it a shot, see what happens.

Some say...

After you've crushed a few blocks of wood, heat the bolt a bit with a torch, then try again.

If you can get your hands on a chain wrench :hmm , then you would wrap that around the pulley and use a breaker bar to pop off the bolt..that's if you can find a chain wrench.I have one from when I was working on Lexus and that's how you get those off.. ^o)

If you're not going to reuse the timing belt, you could turn it into a strap wrench that would hold the pulley pretty well :) Wrap it around the pulley and clamp it tight very close to the pulley, wedge it against something and use a breaker bar to turn the bolt maybe?

The other suggestion I read about was rotating the #1 piston past TDC and into the power stroke, spark plug out and feed as much new 1/8" nylon rope into the compression chamber that you can - leaving rope hanging out of the engine. Now as you unscrew the bolt CCW the rope is compressed in the cylinder against closed valves. :dunno

Bad Bent, I was just getting ready to say the same thing after I finished scrolling down to the bottom of the page. It usually works.
