91 metro 1.0 stick. Has been not running for two possibly three years. My friend who give me the car say's to me that the timing belt broke but it was running just fine before the incident. I have check everything, compression on the cylinders is 130, timing belt installed on top TDC, ignition cleaned checked and installed (it has spark), it is getting fuel, brand new battery and it cranks real good with the exception of a hesitating for one stroke, spits out of the mouth of the fuel injector housing (sometimes gets on fire) and back to cranking smoothly for a few cicles and does it again. I have a Chilton book that I'm using as a reference and my only issue with the book and the car is the ignition spark plugs (outside) rotor cap picture on the book shows a different configuration than that on the car. All spark plugs cables are in the correct place but if I try by the book is doing the same thing. Thank you for your help. Ralph Otero |

How did you verify that the timing belt is not broken? It sounds to me like the intake valve on at least one cylinder is out of wack some how... |

So you say it IS broken? Then that's your problem! Don't bother doing compression tests or starting it, you've got to change that first. Or did you already and I'm missing something? |

Welcome to the forum, jazzman1220 ! If you wish to see real pictures... Correct Timing Belt Replacement so you can verify the pictures against what you did. Correct Timing. IMHO Chilton is so so and you'll appreciate a shop (service) manual. ebay.com/manual or search '91 geo service.' Correct firing order. |

Make sure the distributor(itself not the cap) and rotor are not 180 off, it'll give that kind of symptom if it is. |

If the belt is good. I couldn't tell whether you changed it or not. Then the symptoms indicate a firing order problem. Mis-wiring the plugs. Carbon track or cracked distributor cap. Burned distributor rotor. Check these. Recheck compression after you get the engine running. |

If you have compression and spark that should indicate you have a working timing belt. You indicated the belt was put on correctly, but if it was not, that could give you the symptoms you have. Not to be rude, but how did you determine it is on correctly? Check this closely if you did not do it yourself. The gear could be put back on wrong etc. Make shure #1 TDC happens when both valves for #1 are closed and the rotor point to the #1 electrode. Double check the plug wire order. The compression is a bit low, but you might just have some stuck rings. A soak down of the cylinders in laquer thiner (sp?) would help, followed by an oil change. |
