My 92 LSi has been sitting in my garage for over 1 1/2 months while I fixed rust problems etc on it and a bunch of other hi pri things like my daughter's wedding. A couple of weeks ago I tried to start it and the battery was completely dead so I put the charger on for a few hours (12v 6 A) and the needle went all the way to full by the time I got it off. I didn't have time to do anything more, didn't even try to start it at that time. Then yesterday I tried to start it again and the battery was nearly dead - just got dim idiot lights and a little click from the solenoid. I put the charger back on the battery and the needle still was all the way to full charge but it was quivering quite a bit. Any idea if I overcharged and ruined my battery or what? It's like it won't draw any current to charge further, but it is mostly dead still. |

Do you have a spare battery from another car? If so, switch out and attempt to fire. Wait an hour, and do it again. If it fires up nice and strong, it's probably the battery. If the other battery starts to drain, you may have a grounding issue or loose wire somewhere. |

Some battery chargers will cut out trying to charge a fully discharged battery. Put the battery in the car and boost it off with another car and run it awhile and the car will charge it back up most likely. If the battery has some age on it and you run it all the way down, it might not take another charge if it has a bad cell. Your alternator will charge it faster than a battery charger will. You can also take it to a parts store and have them test/charge it. It's usually free. enginedoctorgeo is right about your charger too. Depending how smart it is, some chargers will turn off if the battery requires more charge current than the charger can supply. ie battery was drawing more than 6A. |

also you did not come close to charging. if its say a 60amp battery and you charged it for 4 hours at 6 amps you did not even put HALF its capacity back into it. Should take 10 hours to recharge at 6 amps. IE keep charging it. also lower the amps (2 amps is good) and give it 1.5 to 2 days. will get a better charge less sulfation and it might survive. try not to do that. going below 80% is very bad for starter batts killing them PERMANENTLY damages them. IE get a $10 battery tender from harbor freight and put it on it. |

A battery can't INSTANLY go to full charge, charging take SOME time. In fact, this is a good test for a battery. Does it seem to charge instantly? Instant charge = open cell = bad battery. |

Long story short, I borrowed a friend's charger that is smarter/more powerful than mine, left it on all night, and the engine started right up in the morning (even though the charger didn't say the battery was completely charged) and it hasn't given me any problem since. |
