snapped timing belt, any hope?; timing belt

I let my timing belt go and it snapped. Is it even POSSIBLE this didn't destroy the engine???

previous owner said something about how it left him stranded when this happened before but he didn't mention any new engine or head. Maybe he was talking about a whole other car.

Is it worth taking a gamble and slapping on new belt?

Are there special tools required?

AutoMD.com says all these but I didn't see it in Hayes manual....

These engines aren't interference, so no damage will have been done. Replace the belt and you'll be fine. I think there's a guide on the How-To section.

Your outta luck, break the timing belt and car is ruined. Can you bring it to me, I will give you a hundred bucks for it! Well that is the lie, the good news is all you need to be out is the cost of a belt. You didnt hurt your engine. No more tools then you need to replace the timing belt you can borrow from the parts house you buy your belt at most likely.

replace that belt and drive it. belt should be $20. you don't need a pulley puller. or half of that stuff. You have to take off the accesory belts, remove the the 4 or 5 bolts for the crank pulley. I think they are 8mm. take off the timing cover. think they are 10 mm. loosen up the tensioner and take it off.
That is the way my 3 cyl was. correct me if any of that is different for his car. There should be any special tools required. its actually an easy task

Also with the crank pulley there should be one big bolt in the middle....you do not have to take that off. Im sure I missed a few things

if you have any probs come here. I wouldn't listen to any regular car website unless it specializes in just these cars. Many of the people on this website have worked on these cars and have a first hand experience. slap a belt on there and drive it.

I saw that confusion when I was first looking into the g10 engine also. I checked it for myself. It is not a interferance engine. Question, how was your car running before the belt broke? Was it missing or smoking or running pretty good?

I think you guys just made my week!!! I got a car again that doesn't get 10MPG like my backup van, as soon as I get this timing belt done!!

Now that it seems some engines are called interference when they ain't, are any not called that which is?

not sure but hell yea on getting mpg. you should easily be getting 4 times the gas mileage of your 10 mpg car!

Not sure if any interference engines are labeled non-interference. Anyway, I think almost every engine is an interference engine. The reason for this is that interference engines produce more power. They produce more power by opening the valves further.

The result is more power because the engine is able to get more air and fuel. the downside is if you break a belt at the point where the valve is open, the piston will strike it on it's way to top dead center.

The name of the game for the Geos is economical pricing, and fuel economy. So, no reason to design the valves to open far.

i go super fast on the freeway (55 mph) <-- i cant believe how fast it is :P
