Have a 1991 and 1993 geo metro. How can one tell when the timing belts need to be changed and how is this done? Do they give any warning before they go out? Thanks for all and any help on this! |

How many miles are on it? How loose is the belt? How much adjustment is left I'd replace it if you're concerned. |

Usually you cannot tell when they need to be replaced - only by mileage. They do not give a warning before going out - at least not one you can count on. As Coche said, if you're worried about it - change it. It's easy on these cars. |

I have had 2 go out. Absolutely no warning. One second the car is running, next, its not. If you don't know the history of the car, replace it. Then, every 60 - 80 thousand miles. Cheap insurance against getting stranded on the side of the road. |

Gates TCK166 is a timing belt + tensioner pulley for $32 before shipping from RockAuto. I just installed this kit 2 weekends ago on my 92' Edited by JellyBeanDriver, Jun 22 2010, 11:37 PM.

Even cheaper insurance, *after* reading the above article, buy a spare and keep that and the tools needed to change it in the car. Sure, it won't stop you from ever snapping one, nor from winding up on the side of the road, but you'll be up and going again about 20 mins or less later
