I'd just like to see how many PSI they would make with an extra 10 CCs of carbon...lol

lol, you know, now that you mention it i'd like to see the compression of it too. probably running a smooth 11:1 with all the carbon buildup inside'er ;)

Duct tape heals all wounds

Back in the day, we used to remove material left behind with a flexible metal scraper, like a putty knife. I doubt that would be recommended for these engines though, think more like a very soft plastic bristle (stiff bristles though) brush, a plastic scraper, something along those lines. Finish up with compressed air to blow any scraps out.

I'm sure someone who has actually done this will be along shortly with a more comprehensive answer :)

Diesel Power

I just rebuilt mine as you know. For the cylinder deck and head i used a razor blade. Be careful to hold it firm because it will dig into the aluminum. The valves I took out and put them on the wire wheel VERY GENTLY so i would not trash the seats. head was real hard to get rid of all the carbon deposits, but i used the parts cleaner at work. In my opinion carb and choke cleaner works really well to clean out the intake ports and exhaust ports too.

As for the water jackets mine filled up with lots of gasket material so i bought a 40 dollar wet/dry vac at sears and sucked all the water out of it along with the gasket material that was left in the bottom of the water jackets.

Yah, when I say old days or back in the day, I'm talking cast iron blocks. Digging into your aluminum block is why I say plastic now, if your not sure your far less likely to damage it. If you have a real stead calibrated hand and arm, though like Obaja, sure, metal still works ;)

yea i was thinking that, cause when i was replacing the distributor gasket my has slipped and i indented the metal a tiny bit, nothing bad but i don't wanna risk that on the block.

So, can anyone else offer any insight as to how I can clear the block of old head gasket pieces without risking damage to the block by using a blade? also, do i have to take the valvetrain out of the head in order to send it to a machine shop (i feel that might be a question best left not asked...)

I'd use a heavy plastic putty knife on the block. Vacuum sounds good to me for cleaning up the debris.

Can someone post a photo of their throttle body without the air filter assembly on please, I want to make sure I've plugged everything on right.

Check for a picture on the underside of your hood...it should be right there.

well i finally got the head off :rocker , and i don't think I've ever seen such bad carbon deposits. the head gasket is so badly worn and falling apart it's falling into the coolant jackets, what do you guys think i should do? also how do i remove the stuck on pieces of gasket off the block and cylinder head? Thanks guys!

So, i got the head done, on my friends geo, I took a look at it earlier, and told him, "you need to either get a new head or get it resurfaced" He says "No my dad, and his neighbor who worked with nascar said it was okay." So I went ahead and put the head on, and as soon as i turn her on.
white smoke EVERYWHERE, Hate to say I told you so, but I told you so.
3tec I may be contacting you soon for a head.
